stop 后接動名詞表示停止做某事，接不定式表示停下正在做的事去做另一事。如：

He stopped speaking, and there was not a sound in the room. 他停止講話，房里一點聲音也沒有了。

When he told US the story, we just couldn’t stop laughing. 他給我們講完故事后，我們不禁都笑個不停。

They stopped to ask the way. 他們停下來問路。

He stopped to listen, but there was no more sound. 他停下來聽，但再也沒有聽到什么聲音。

On the way to the station I stopped to buy a paper. 在去火車站的路上，我停下來買了一張報紙。

【注】后接不定式時，不定式不是賓語，而是目的狀語。

第五條 

can’t help后接動名詞表示禁不住去做某事，接不定式表示不能幫助做某事：

He couldn’t help crying when he heard the news. 他聽到這個消息時禁不住哭了。

The medicine can’t help to get rid of your cold. 這藥不能幫你治好感冒。

She sold her house. She can’t help regretting it. 她賣掉了她的房子，她不禁感到惋惜。

If one has talent, one can’t help showing it. 一個人如有才能，他總是會有所表現的。

She’s a funny girl, but yet you can’t help liking her. 她是一個奇怪的姑娘，但你禁不住會喜歡她。

He is such a marvelious joker (that) you can’t help laughing. 他是一個如此奇妙的詼諧人物，(以致) 弄得你不能不笑。

第六條

go on 后接不定式表示做完某事后接著做另一事，接動名詞表示繼續做正在做的事：

You oughtn’t to go on living this way. 你不應該再這樣生活下去了。

We went on talking till after midnight. 我們繼續談話直到午夜以后。

Go on to do the other exercises after you have finished this one. 做完這個練習后, 請接著做其他的練習。

After approving the agenda, we went on to discuss finance. 通過了議事日程后，我們接著討論財政問題。

【注】也人認為go on doing sth中的doing是現在分詞而不是動名詞。
