4. 兩種所有格的用法比較

(1) -’s 所有格主要用于有生命的東西，而 of 所有格則可用于有生命的東西，也可用于無生命的東西。如：

I don’t like Mrs Green’s children. =I don’t like the children of Mrs Green. 我不喜歡格林夫人的孩子。

He played the role of the old king in the play. 他在劇中扮演老國王。

The score of the game is two all. 比賽結果是二比二平。(from www.hz123456.com)

【說明】-s所有格有時也可用于無生命的東西，主要用于表時間、國家、城市、組織機構、車輛船只以及某些集合名詞或度量衡等的名詞后。如：

Have you seen today’s paper? 你看到今天的報紙了嗎？

I like the car’s design. 我喜歡這輛車的設計。

Which’s the country’s biggest city? 這個國家最大的城市是哪個?

The new medicine is the harvest of 20 years’research. 這種新藥是20年研究的成果。

(2) 表示類別、來源等時，通常要用 -’s 所有格；表示同位關系時，通常要用of 所有格。如：“男廁所”、“女廁所”可說成 men’s room, women’s room，但通常不說 the room of men, the room of women，因為其中的“男”和“女”表示的是類別；而“長沙市”通常說成 the city of Shangsha，而不會說成 Shangsha’s city，因為“長沙”與“市”是同位關系。

5. 雙重所有格

在英語中，將-’s所有格(包括名詞性物主代詞)與of 所有格結合起來所構成的所有格就叫做雙重所有格。如a friend of Li Lei’s。在使用雙重所有格時要注意以下幾點：

(1) 受雙重所有格修飾的名詞通常不能是專有名詞或具有獨一無二性質的名詞。如不說 Jim of Mrs. Smith’s / a father of Mary’s，可改說 Mrs. Smith’s Jim / Mary’s father。

(2) 受雙重所有格修飾的名詞通常不能帶定冠詞，但可帶指示代詞this, that, these, those，表示某種感****彩(如贊賞、厭惡等)。如不說 the masterpiece of Tom’s，但可說 this / that masterpiece of Tom’s。

(3) 雙重所有格中帶-’s所有格的名詞通常應是確指的。如不說 a brother of a friend’s，但可說 a friend of my friend’s。

(4) 雙重所有格中帶-’s所有格的名詞通常應是生命的東西。如不說a window of the room’s，應改為a window of the room。

(5) 有時兩種所有格均可使用，但所表達的意義不同。比較：

This is a photo of my mother’s. 這是我母親收藏的一張照片。

This is a photo of my mother. 這是我母親照的一張照片。

He’s a friend of my father’s. 他是我父親的一個朋友。(意指朋友不只一個)

He’s a friend of my father. 他是我父親的朋友。(強調兩人之間的友情)

A：Who told you that? 這是誰告訴你的？

A：If he says such things, he is not a friend of my father. 如果他說那樣的話，那他對我父親就不夠朋友。

6. 所有格的省略

有時受所有格修飾的名詞可以省略，如省略表示教堂、商店的名詞，省略某人家或某人辦公室的名詞，省略前文剛剛提到過的名詞。如：

Mother has gone to the butcher’s (shop). 母親到肉鋪去了。

I went over to John’s, but he was at his sister’s. 我到去了約翰家，但他去了他姐姐家。
