指示代詞用法辨析

1. that和those可替代前面出現的名詞以避免重復，而this和these不能。如：

The weather of Guangzhou is better than that of Beijing.廣州的天氣比北京的天氣好。

The books here are more interesting than those on the desk.這邊的這些書比桌上的那些書更有趣。

2. that和those可作定語從句的先行詞，但this和 these不能；其中those可指人，但that不能。如：

He admired that which looked beautiful.他贊賞那件外表漂亮的東西。

He admired those which looked beautiful.他贊賞那些外表漂亮的東西。

He admired those who looked beautiful他贊賞那些外表漂亮的人(from www.yygrammar)。　　

3. this, these是時間或空間上的“近指”，可與here連用；that, those是時間或空間上的“遠指”，可與there連用。

4. 指上文提到的事一般用that，有時也用this，指下文的事只能用this。如：

How to deal with it, that/this is the question.如何處理此事，這就是問題所在。

This is the question, how to deal with it.這是個問題：如何處理此事。(不能用that)

5. 打電話時，用this來介紹自己，用that來問對方是誰，不用I或you。如：

－Who’s that?－This is Mary speaking.―你是哪位？―我是瑪麗。
