如何翻譯these days

■《英漢雙解·劍橋國際英語詞典》的 toast (n.)詞條下有這樣一句(p.1462)：

Not so long ago Viviana was a little-known actress playing in a provincial theatre—these days she’s the toast of the town.

該詞典的翻譯是：

不久以前薇薇安娜還是一個在地方劇院演出的鮮為人知的演員——而這些天她成了鎮上極為受人敬慕的人。

■我們認為將原句中的 these days 譯為“這些天”與本句上下文語境不太相符——按理說，“不久以前”應該與“現在”相對，而不是與“這些天”相對。

事實上，these days通常被作為習語看待，與《英漢雙解——劍橋國際英語詞典》同出一“家”的《劍橋高級英語詞典》對these days解釋是：used to talk about the present time, in comparison with the past（用于談論現在，與過去相對照）；《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》(第四版)對these days 的解釋是：nowadays（如今，當今，現在）。

下面是我們從《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》(第四版)找來的幾個例句（中文翻譯也是引自該詞典）：

There isn’t much call for such things these days. 這種東西近來需求量不大。(call詞條)

I’m really getting into jazz these days. 近來我喜愛上爵士樂了。(get詞條)

■順便說一句，one of these days也是習語，其意為“不久”“遲早有一天”，不要想當然地譯錯了。如：

One of these days he’ll realize what a fool he’s been. 不久他就會明白他一直是多么愚蠢。

I’m sure your watch will turn up one of these days. 我擔保你的手表遲早有一天能找到。

That wretched child I’ll swing for him one of these days! 那個討厭的孩子——早晚得把我逼死！

■當然，如果語境允許，并且不強調與過去的對比，將 these days 譯成“這些天”也是可以。如：

I’m continually running into Paul these days. 這些天來我老是不斷地撞見保羅。

We are having a cold wave these days. 這些天我們正遇上了寒流。

尤其是當 these days 用作主語時：

These days are cold. 這些天很涼。

但是，有些句子由于語境特殊，將 these days 譯為“這些天”會顯得很“怪”。如：

Jobs are hard to come by these days.

這個句子顯然只能譯為“近來工作很難找”，如果譯為“這些天來工作很難找”，那就讓人覺得很“怪”，因為“工作難找”這一現象不是幾天工夫就會改變的。
