3. 與兩位老師商榷

黃衛(wèi)峰先生認為We have made the necessary cuts in the numbers of military personnel, while weaponry has been greatly improved中的numbers 沒有理由使用復(fù)數(shù)形式，筆者也基本贊同，但為避免誤解，措詞可稍調(diào)整一下，如將“沒有理由使用復(fù)數(shù)形式”改為“最好改用單數(shù)形式”。

李翔老師認為“為了突出強調(diào)新中國的9次裁軍，此處非用 numbers 不可”。筆者認為這樣的表述有點過于絕對，因為根據(jù)所引用的句子（We have made the necessary cuts in the numbers of military personnel…）來看，“9次裁軍”的“數(shù)量”概念已經(jīng)用復(fù)數(shù)名詞 cuts 體現(xiàn)出來了，完全無需再將 number 改用復(fù)數(shù)。況且，就算是因為有了“多次”意味，也未必將number“非改為復(fù)數(shù)不可”。請看以下實例（均引自英美國家的權(quán)威詞典和語法著作）：

(1) a rise in the number of burglaries committed in the area ——摘自《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》(Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary of Current English) (第6版) burglary 詞條。

該短語的大意是“該地區(qū)盜竊案例數(shù)目的上升”。顯然，這個句子含有“多次”的含義，但 number 并沒有用復(fù)數(shù)。

(2) The number of indecent assaults has increased alarmingly over the past year. ——摘自《劍橋國際英語詞典》(Cambridge International Dictionary of English) assault 詞條。

這句話的大意是“在過去的一年中，猥褻強暴的犯罪次數(shù)有了驚人的增長”。顯然，這個句子含有“多次”的含義，但 number 并沒有用復(fù)數(shù)。

(3) The bank’s branches in London have seen a large increase in the number of robberies this year. ——摘自外文出版社社與商務(wù)印書館出版的《英語語法系列——限定詞及數(shù)量詞》(Collins Cobuild—Determiners & Quantifiers)第3.2節(jié)。

這個句子的大意是“今年，發(fā)生在該銀行倫敦各分行的搶劫次數(shù)大幅度上升”。顯然，這個句子含有“多次”的含義，但 number 并沒有用復(fù)數(shù)。

(4) The number of burglaries in the area seems to be on the increase. ——摘自商務(wù)印館出版的《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》(Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary of Current English) (1989年第四版)的 increase 詞條。

這個句子的大意是“這一地區(qū)的入室盜竊案件似有增無已”。顯然，這個句子含有“多次”的含義，但 number 并沒有用復(fù)數(shù)。

(5) The police are worried about the increase in the number of stabbings in the city. ——摘自商務(wù)印館出版的《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》(Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary of Current English) (1989年第四版)的 stabbing 詞條。

此句大意為“市內(nèi)利器傷人案增多，警方甚感憂慮”。顯然，這個句子含有“多次”的含義，但 number 并沒有用復(fù)數(shù)。

3. 結(jié)論

通過以上分析，筆者認為 We have made the necessary cuts in the numbers of military personnel, while weaponry has been greatly improved 這一句中的 number 可以用復(fù)數(shù)，也可以用單數(shù)，但顯然以單數(shù)用法為普通，所以筆者認為還是將原文中的 numbers 改用單數(shù)為好。
