表示“結果”的方法歸納

一、用不定式表示結果

1. (only) to do sth

We came home to find our garden neat and tidy. 我們回到家里發現花園整整齊齊。

He hurried to the house only to find that it was empty. 他急忙趕到那所房子，卻發現空無一人。

He survived the crash only to die in the desert. 飛機墜毀時他幸免于難，后來卻死在沙漠里。

說明：帶有副詞修飾語 only 的不定式通常表示一種出乎意料的結果，見上例。

2. enough to do sth

The patient is well enough to sit up in bed now. 病人現在已能在床上坐起來了。

He’s big enough to go out without his parents. 他已長大，不用父母陪著出門了。

3. too …to do sth

It is too soon for me to say whether the scheme will succeed or not. 現在要我來說計劃能否成功還為時過早。

As a conductor he is too experienced to mind what the critics say. 他是一位經驗非常豐富的指揮家，根本不會在乎評論家的意見。

注意，如果too之后的形容詞是anxious, glad, good, pleased, ready, thankful, true, willing等，則其后的動詞不定式修飾的是這些形容詞，而不是修飾too，所以表肯定的意思。此時的too前面通常會有only, just等修飾。如：

I’m only too glad to stay at home. 我太想留在家里啦。(too修飾glad to stay at home)

I’m just too anxious to help you. 我正是想幫助你哩。(too修飾anxious to help you)

You are too ready to find faults in other people. 你就愛找別人的岔兒。(too 修飾ready to find...people)

4. so...as to do sth

I’m not so simple as to think it will be easy. 我決不至于笨得以為那是容易的事。

The house is so high and narrow as to resemble a tower. 這房子又高又窄，像一座塔。

5. such...as to do sth

He spoke in such a manner as to offend them. 他用這種方式講話，以致冒犯了他們。

It was such aloud noise as to wake everybody in the house. 聲音這么大，房子里的每個人都給吵醒了。

二、用現在分詞表示結果

用現在分詞表結果，常置于句末。如：

The phone rang, interrupting the flow of his thoughts. 電話響了，打斷了他的思緒。

The child fell, striking his head against the door and cutting it. 那孩子跌倒了，頭碰在門上磕破了。

Both machines crashed near Hatfield, killing their crews. 兩架飛機在哈特菲爾德相撞，結果機組人員全部喪生。

She was so angry that she threw her new doll on the floor breaking it into pieces. 她大怒，把她新買的娃娃扔在地上，摔得粉碎。

三、用過去分詞表示結果

用過去分詞表結果，也通常是置于句末，但這種用法比較少見。如：

It rained and rained, vehicles bogged and bridges washed out. 雨不停地下，車輛陷入泥沼，橋梁被水沖垮。

四、由并列連詞表示結果

1. and

He fell heavily and broke his arm. 他摔得很重，手臂都摔斷了。

Arrive late once more and you’re fired. 你再遲到一次，你就會被開除。

2. so

The door was locked, so we couldn’t get in. 門上鎖了，所以我們進不去。

It was dark, so I couldn’t see what was happening. 天很黑，所以我看不見發生了什么事。

五、由從屬連詞表示結果

1. so that

He studied hard so that he passed the exam. 他學習用功，所以考試通過了。

I went to the lecture early so that I got a good seat. 我去聽演講去得很早，所以找了個好座位。

2. so…that

He was so angry that he couldn’t speak. 他氣得話都說不出來。

I am so busy that I have no time to write a letter. 我很忙，連寫信的時間都沒有。

3. such…that

He shut the window with such force that the glass broke. 他關窗戶用力很大，結果玻璃震破了。

She spoke with such sincerity that he felt greatly touched. 她說得那樣誠懇，他深受感動。

六、由介詞短語表示結果

1. without…

Possibly this person died without anyone knowing where the coins were hidden. 可能這個人去世后就沒有人知道這批硬幣藏在什么地方了。

2. as a result

As a result he had to leave his country. 結果他只好離開自己的國家。

Penrose gambled heavily and, as a result, lost a lot of money. 彭羅斯賭得很厲害，結果輸了很多錢。

七、用副詞表示結果

1. therefore

It rained; therefore the game was called off. 由于下雨，因而那場球賽取消了。

Therefore, we must advocate the forming of workshop committees. 因此我們倡導組織車間委員會。

2. thus

He studied hard, thus he got high marks. 他學習努力，因此得了高分(www.hz123456.com)。

He sold his farm and thus he had enough money for his journey. 他賣掉了農場，這樣他就有足夠的錢旅行了。
