介詞about用法說明　　

1. 表示“大約”，通常用于數字前。如：　　

It costs about $10. 這需10美元左右。　　

He arrived at about 10 o’clock. 他大約10點鐘到達。　　

2. 在動詞 know, hear, speak 等之后用不用介詞 about，含義有差別。如：　　

I have heard about him, but I don’t know him. 我聽到過一些關于他的事，但不認識他這個人。　　

I’ve heard of him, but I don’t know about him. 我聽說過他，但我不知道有關他的情況。　　

試比較：　　

He knows her. 他認識她。　　

He knows of her. 他知道有她這樣一個人。　　

He knows about her. 他知道有關她的情況。　　

3. 用于be about to do sth結構，其意為“即將”“馬上”。注意該短語不與具體的時間狀語（如 soon, tomorrow, immediately, at once 等）連用。如：　　

可以說：We are about to leave for Beijing. 我們正要動身去北京。　　

不能說：We are about to leave for Beijing tomorrow.　　

但是，該結構可與副詞just連用，使將來更加具有即時感。如：　　

They are just about to leave. 他們馬上就要離開了。　　

另外，該結構本身可用于時間狀語從句中。如：　　

The accident happened as the jet was about to take off. 噴氣式飛機正要起飛時出了事故。　　

也可表示“這時（突然）”的when連用。如：　　

I was (just) about to go to bed when the telephone rang. 我正要上床睡覺，這時電話鈴突然響了起來。　　

在美國英語中，be about to do sth 的否定式可表示“不愿意做某事”。如：　　

I’m not about to pay 100 dollars for that dress. 我不愿意花100美元買那件衣服。

4. about 表示“關于”時，它與介詞 on 有區別：簡單地說，about 表示一般性和通俗性，on 表示嚴肅性和學術性。比較：　　

a book on birds 指的可能是一本論及鳥類的學術著作　　

a book about birds 指的可能是一本供小孩看的關于鳥的故事書　　

speak on education 發表有關教育的演說（可能作過正式準備）　　

speak about education 談論教育（可能是非正式的談話或偶然談到）　　

由于以上用法上的區別，所以像 chat, quarrel 這類動詞由于其意義不具備“嚴肅性”，所以可以搭配介詞 about，但搭配介詞 on 就不合適。　　

另外，有時用 about 還是 on，與所搭配的詞語有關。如：　　

a story about ghosts 一個有關鬼的故事（story后通常搭配 about）　　

a report on the state of the roads 路況報告（report 后通常搭配 on）　　

read about sth 讀到關于某事的情況（動詞 read 后通常搭配 about）　　

5. 不要按漢語意思，在一些及物動詞后誤加介詞 about, 而在一些不及物動詞后該加 about 時卻漏加。如：　　

他沒什么不滿吧？　　

誤：He has nothing to complain, does he?　　

正：He has nothing to complain about, does he?　　

析：表示抱怨某事時，complain 不及物，其后需接介詞 about 或 of 再帶名詞或代詞作賓語。（本句中 about 的邏輯賓語是 nothing）　　

我們會盡快討論此事的。　　

誤：We’ll discuss about it as soon as possible.　　

正：We’ll discuss it as soon as possible.　　

析：discuss（討論）為及物動詞，后接賓語時，無需用介詞。類似地，英語說 consider sth, 而不說 consider about sth；可說 doubt sth, 而不說 doubt about sth；可說 explain sth，而不說 explain about sth；可說 report sth，而不說 report about sth；等等。
