1. 主要表示意外事故。如：

The accident happened at about 5.30. 事故大約發生在5點半鐘。

Poor Jim has just had an accident. 可憐的吉姆剛出了個事故。

The accident was due to carelessness. 這起車禍是由粗心造成的。

有時也表示偶然發生的意外事件，不一定是“事故”。如：

I’m sorry I broke the glass. It was an accident. 我很抱歉打破了玻璃杯，這完全是無意的。

2. 用于It is no accident that…，其意為“……絕非偶然”。如：

It is no accident that men fill most of the top jobs. 大多數高級職位由男性擔任絕非偶然。

3. 用于習語by accident，其意為“偶然地”“無意地”，主要用作狀語，有時也用作表語。如：

I deleted the file by accident. 我無意中把文章刪掉了。

If he knew this, it would have had to be by accident. 假如他已知道此事，那一定是出于偶然的。

漢語常將“無意地”與“故意地”用在一起，后者的英語表達是by design或on purpose（注意各自所搭配的介詞）。如

I’m sure he ignored you by accident and not by design. 我想他沒理你是無意不是有意的。

I don’t know if it was done by accident or on purpose. 我不知道那是偶然的還是故意的。

■according prep.

1. 用于according to，意為“根據”，為復合介詞，后接名詞或代詞。注意以下用法：

(1) 主要用來表示“根據”某學說、某書刊、某文件、某人所說等或表示“按照”某法律、某規定、某慣例、某情況等。如：

Everything went off according to plan. 一切都按照計劃實現了。

According to my watch it is five o’clock. 照我的表，現在是5點鐘。

Each man will be paid according to his ability. 每個人將根據他的能力獲得報酬。

(2) according to 表示“根據”，通常是指根據別人或別處，而不能根據自己，所以其后不能接表示第一人稱的代詞（如me, us），同時也很少接表示第二人稱的代詞（you），但用于第三人稱（如 him, her, Jim, Mary, the doctor等）則屬正常用法。如：

誤：According to me, the film is wonderful.

正：In my opinion, the film is wonderful. 依我看，這部電影很不錯。

另外注意，according to后也不接view（看法）和opinion（意見）這類詞表示看法的詞。如：

誤：According to my opinion, he did it very well.

正：In my opinion, he did it very well. 在我看來，他干得很不錯。

2. 用于according as，意為“根據”“隨……而定”，后接從句。如：

Everyone contributes according as he is able. 每個人根據自己的能力做出貢獻。

You will be praised or blamed according as your work is good or bad. 根據你工作的好壞，你會得到表揚或批評。

但是，對于那些由what, which, whether, how, when, where等引導的句子，其前要用according to，不用according as。如：

He is an honest businessman, according to what everyone says. 根據大家所說，他是位誠實的商人。

The amount of tax people pay varies according to where they live. 居住地不同，人們所交的稅額也各不相同。

These apples have been graded according to how big they are. 這些蘋果已經按照大小分了等級。

They were arranged according to when they happened. 它們是按發生的時間安排的。
