狀語從句在復合句中的位置

一般說來，狀語從句在復合句中的位置比較靈活，有時置于句首，有時置于句末，有時置于句首與句末都可以。如：

While I was working in the garden, my wife was cooking dinner. 我在園子里干活時，我妻子正在做飯。

Wait until the children settle down before you start the lesson. 等學生都靜下心來再開始上課。

當狀語從句置于句首時，其后通常會用逗號隔開。但當句子較短或當狀語從句與主句的關系比較密切時，也可以不用逗號。如：

If you pull too hard you will break the rope. 如果太用力拉，就會把繩子拉斷。

When he smiled he exposed a set of perfect white teeth. 他笑時露出了一口漂亮的白牙。

當狀語從句位于句末時，其前一般不用逗號。但是，如果狀語從句與其前主句的關系不是很密切，尤其作為添補內容時，其前也可用逗號，如：

Better say yes, if they ask you. 如果他們問你，你最好說“是”。

We knew he couldn’t have paid for it, because he had no money. 我們知道不可能是他付了這筆錢，因為他沒錢。

另外，狀語從句有時也可位于句子中間，如：

He said that if I passed my test he would buy me a car. 他說如果我通過考試，他將給我買輛汽車。

This, if the news (should) be true, is a very serious matter. 如果消息屬實，這可是一件非常嚴重的事情。
