副詞again用法與習慣

1. 一般說來，它不與那些已含有 again 意義的動詞連用，以免構成用詞重復。如：

請再說一遍。

正：Please repeat it. / Please say it again.

誤：Please repeat it again.

但是有時為了強調，again 本身卻可以疊用。如：

He made the same mistake again and again. 他反復犯同樣的錯誤。

有時也可見 again 與 repeat 之類的詞連用，但那表示的是第3次而不是第2次。如：

He had to repeat it again. 他只好又重復了一遍。（即連同原來的第一遍和第二遍共計3遍）

2. 注意以下含有again的表達，不要誤解其意思：

(1) then again 再說，另一方面。用于引出相對照的事實或看法。如：

He’s clumsy and untidy but then again he’s always willing to help. 他笨手笨腳的又邋遢；可是話說回來，他總是樂于助人。

有時也說there again。

(2) 以下各例用于“as + adj. + again”結構中的again表示“增加”：

My uncle is as old again as I am. 我叔叔的年齡比我大一倍。

I’d like the photograph enlarged so that it’s half as big again. 我想把這張照片放大一半。

這類結構尤其見于as many again, as much again這兩個結構。如：

I’d like as many [much] again. 我愿再增加一倍。

The cost is about half as much again as it was two years ago. 現在的價格比兩年前提高約一半。

There aren’t enough chairs for the meeting—we need half as many again. 供開會用的椅子數量不夠——需要再增加一半。
