4. 用于提出想法

would有時用于提出想法，通常與like, love, hate, prefer, be glad, be happy等連用。如：

I would like to make a suggestion. 我想提一個建議。

I’d love to have a room of my own. 我想有一個自己的房間。

I’d hate to disturb him if he’s busy. 如果他忙，我就不想打擾他了。

I’d prefer to go by bike. 我想騎自行車去。

若用于第一人稱有時也可將would換成should。如：

I should be glad to talk to him. 我會高興和他談談。

I should like to give him a chance. 我愿意給他一個機會。

注意，這樣用的would習慣上不能換成will。

5. 表示習慣或傾向

will和would均可用于表示習慣或傾向——既可指某人特有的習慣，也可指事物的自然傾向。其中will表示現在的習慣，would表示過去的習慣。如：

Water will boil at 100C. 水到攝氏100就會沸騰。

He will always complain if he gets the opportunity. 他一有機會總要抱怨。

When we were students we would often stay up all night. 我們當學生時，經常通宵不睡。

I planted a vine last year, but it wouldn’t grow because it didn’t get enough sun. 去年我種了一棵葡萄，但它因陽光不足沒有長大。

有時，也用于談論某人令人不耐煩的習慣或傾向。如：

That’s just like him—he would lose his keys! 他就是這樣，老丟鑰匙!

Harriet will keep leaving her things all over the floor. 哈麗特總是把她的東西扔得滿地都是。

6. 表示推測

will和would都可用于表示推測——will用于談論現在；would用于談論過去，但也可用于談論現在，只是語氣比較委婉、比較不確定。如：

He will be waiting downstairs now. 他現在應該在樓下等吧!

You’ll be Dr. Livingston, I presume? 我猜您就是李溫斯頓博士吧?

You wouldn’t tell anyone, would you? 你不會告訴別人的，對吧?

That would be the watch you are looking for. 那大概是你在尋找的手表吧。

有時可后接完成式，表示對過去可能已經發生的情況進行推測。如：

You will have heard the news, I think? 我想，你已經聽到那個新聞了吧?

I thought you would have finished it by now. 我想你現在可能已經做完了吧。
