另外，有時由于說話者的說話角度不一樣，所使用的介詞也可能不一樣。如：

Germany is bounded on the west by France and on the south by Switzerland. 德國西面與法國接壤，南與瑞士為鄰。

此句出自《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》（第4版），句中用了介詞on，說話者可能是站德國之外的角度來說的，故將兩國彼此接壤的關系用on來體現。

The US is bounded in the north by Canada and in the south by Mexico. 美國北鄰加拿大，南鄰墨西哥。

此句出自《朗文當代高級英語辭典》（第7版），句中用了介詞in，說話者可能是站在美國本土這個角度來說的，即指美國與加拿大“在北面”（in the north）接壤，與墨西哥“在南面”(in the south)接壤。

3. 當east, south, west, north用于名詞前作定語時，要注意它們與eastern, southern, western, northern的區別。下面以east與eastern的區別加以說明（其他幾組詞的區別與此類似）。

(1) 當談論模糊的、較不確定的地區時，一般多用eastern。如：

the eastern part of the county 該縣的東部

eastern side of the USA 美國的東部地區

而談論界線較清楚的地方時，則多用east。如：

the east side of the house 房子的東面

the east coast of England 英格蘭東海岸

(2) 在專有名詞中多用east。如：

East China 華東          

East Asia 東亞

East Germany 東德     

East Europe 東歐

South America 南美    

the Middle East 中東

the Far East 遠東        

the Near East 近東

而在普通名詞中多用eastern。如：

the eastern part of Africa 非洲東部

the eastern sky 東方天空

an eastern country 東方國家

(3) 在抽象名詞前，一般用eastern，不用east。如：

the eastern civilization 東方文明

the eastern languages 東方語言

eastern religions 東方宗教

4. 漢語中說“東南西北”或“東西南北”，但在英語中卻通常說成north, south, east and west（北、南、東、西）。如：

North, south, east and west are the four cardinal points of the compass. 東、西、南、北是羅盤上的四個方位基點。

It is colder in the north, warmer in the south, drier in the east and wetter in the west. 北方冷，南方熱，東方干，西方濕。

有時也說north, east, south and west或north, east, west and south或east, west, north and south，但均不算普通。

注意以下各詞語，其方位習慣與漢語完全相反：northeast 東北 / southeast 東南 / northwest 西北 / southwest 西南
