2.與單數可數名詞連用表類別：

I hate the telephone. 我討厭電話。

The cobra is dangerous. 眼鏡蛇是危險的。

3.與某些形容詞連用表示類別：

The rich are not always happier than the poor. 富人并不總是比窮人過得開心。

The old are more likely to catch cold than the young. 老年人比年輕人容易感冒。

4.用于獨一無二的事物名詞前：

The earth goes around the sun. 地球繞著太陽轉。

The sky was blue and clear. 天空清澈湛藍。

5.用于方向或方位等名詞前：

He looked towards the east. 他朝東望。

Turn to the right at the second crossing. 在第二十字路口向右拐。

6.用于序數詞或形容詞的最高級前：

You will be the second to speak. 你第二個發言。

Autumn is the best season here. 秋季是這里最好的季節。

7.用于樂器名詞前表示演奏：

He plays the piano very well. 他的鋼琴彈得很好。

注：若不是從演奏角度來考慮，而是考慮樂器的實體，則不一定用定冠詞：

He bought a piano for his son. 他為兒子買了部鋼琴。

(5) 用于姓氏的復數前，表示全家人或全家中兩個或兩個以上的人：

The Browns live next to us. 布朗一家就住在我們隔壁。

The Greens have no children. 格林夫婦沒有小孩。

(6) 用來代替前面已提到的人的身體部位或衣著等的一部分：

He hit me in the face. 他打我的臉。

He caught the thief by the collar. 他抓住小偷的衣領。

(7) 用于逢整十數詞的復數名詞前，指世紀中的年代或人的約略年歲：

He began to learn French in his fifties. 他五十多歲開始學習法語。

He went to Japan with his family in the sixties. 他在60年代帶家人去了日本。

(8) 用于某些單數可數名詞前，使意義抽象化，指其屬性或功能等：

This colour is pleasant to the eye. 這顏色悅目。

He is fond of the bottle. 他喜歡喝酒。

(9) 表示計算單位，含有 a, each, per 之類的意義：

He is paid by the hour (piece). 他拿計時(件)工資。

It sells at two dollars the pound. 這東西每磅賣兩美元。

(10) 用于人名前，或特指、或比喻、或指其作品等；用于某些產品的名稱前，指產品：

He likes the Picasso. 他喜歡畢加索的畫。

Lu Xun has been known as the Gorky of China. 魯迅人稱中國的高爾基。

(11) 用于江、(運)河、海、洋以及山脈、群島、半島、海島、海峽、沙漠等名稱的前：

the Changjiang River 長江         the Pacific (Ocean) 太平洋

the Suez (Canal) 蘇伊士運河       the Red Sea  紅海

the Jingang Mountains 井岡山      the Bay of Bengal 孟加拉灣

the Sahara 撒哈拉沙漠            the English Channel 英吉利海峽

注：① 關于湖名前是否用冠詞通常要分兩種情況：中國的湖名在英譯時，其前通常加定冠詞：the West Lake 西湖，the Dongting Lake 洞庭湖。而外國的湖名前，多數不加定冠詞，少數加定冠詞，視習慣而定：Lake Success 成功湖，the Lake of Geneva 日內瓦湖

② 山名的構成有兩種方式：若用于“山名＋Mountains”，其前常用定冠詞：the Jinggang Mountains 井岡山；若用于“Mount / Mt＋山名”，則通常不用冠詞：Mount Tai 泰山。另外，若不出現 mountain 一詞時，則通常要用冠詞：the Alps 阿爾卑斯山。

(12) 用于由普通名詞或含有普通名詞構成的專有名詞(如國名、地名、政黨、團體、組織機構以及旅館、商店、學校、醫院、文娛場所、建筑物等)前：

the United Nations 聯合國              the Peace Hotel 和平飯店

the Red Cross Hospital 紅十字醫院       the Friendship Store 友誼商場

the People’s Republic of China 中華人民共和國

the National People’s Congress 全國人民代表大會
