此題應選D, 主要考察“the＋形容詞”結構。用法注意：

1. 表示性質或特征相同的人, 具有復數意義：

The rich are not always happier than the poor. 富人并不一定總比窮人幸福。

類例：

the deaf 聾人 the dead 死者 the blind 盲人

the young 年輕人 the weak 弱者 the old 老人

the strong 強者 the sick 病人 the wounded 傷員

the killed 被殺者 the injured 受傷者

the living 活著的人the unemployed 失業者

the oppressed 被壓迫者 the oppressing 壓迫者

2. 指抽象概念, 表示單數意義：

The true always triumphs. 真理永遠獲勝。

類例：

the good 善良 the right 正義the true 真實

the bad 壞事 the humorous 幽默感 等

有時可能根據其含義的不同, 用法也會有所變化。如thegood 既可表示抽象意義(=what is good), 具有單數意義, 也可表示人的類別(=those who are good), 具有復數意義。

又如以下兩例中的the old：The old are respected inour country. 在我國老年人受到尊重。 / The new is sureto replace the old. 新的東西肯定會代替舊的東西。

6. 人名前可用冠詞嗎

____ are coming to see us tonight.

A. The Smith           B. The Smiths          C. Mr Smiths           D. Mr Smith

此題應選B。容易誤選C, D, 因為在通常情況下, 人名前不用冠詞。此題要選B, 理由是：姓氏的復數形式前加定冠詞, 可以表示某一家人或某某夫婦。又如：

The Lius live upstairs. 劉家住在樓上。

The Blacks managed to buy a computer for theirson. 布萊克夫婦設法為他們的孩子買了臺電腦。

以下各例的人名前也用了冠詞，請注意它在漢語中的意思：

A Mr Brown wants to see you. 一位叫布朗先生的 人要見你。

They thought he was a Zhuge Liang. 他們認為他 是個諸葛亮。

He is a Newton of today. 他是當代的牛頓。

The painting on the wall is a Rembrandt. 墻上 的這幅是倫勃朗的作品。

Lu Xun was called the Gorkey of China. 魯迅被 認為是中國的高爾基。

He was the Homer of his age. 他是他那個時代的 荷馬。

He's sitting in the Ford. 他坐在福特牌汽車里。

A few minutes later he was met by an anxious Miss Smith. 幾分鐘后焦急的史密斯小姐向他迎了 上來。

7. 比較級前可用冠詞嗎

Which is ____ country, Canada or Australia?

A. a large                 B. larger                  C. a larger               D. the larger

此題應選D。容易誤選B, 有的考生認為只有形容詞最高級前才加the, 而比較級前不用the。 但是此題正是要選比較級前帶有the的答案D。理由是：the larger中的the 不是修飾比較級larger, 而是修飾其后的名詞country(表特指)。試比較：Which is larger, Canada or Australia?
