◆operate v.

1. 表示“做手術”，為不及物動詞。要表達給某人(或部位)做手術，后接介詞 on, 一般不直接跟人或部位作賓語。如：

The doctor decided to operate on him (his nose) at once. 醫生決定馬上給他(他的鼻子)動手術。

2. 表示操作或開動(機器)，或經營或管理(公司等)，可用作及物或不及物動詞。如：

Can you operate this computer? 你會操作這臺電腦嗎?

This machine operates night and day. 這機器日夜運轉。

He operates three factories. 他經營三家工廠。

◆opposite adj.，adv.，prep. & n.

1. 用作形容詞，表示“對面的”，可放在被修飾名詞之前或之后(但以放在被修飾名詞之后為普通)；但表示“相反的”，則只能置于被修飾名詞之前。如：

I asked the man opposite if he would open the door. 我問對面的那個人是否愿意開門。

She hurried away in the opposite direction. 她匆匆忙忙朝相反的方向走了。

2. 用作介詞，意為“在……的對面”。如：

The store is opposite the station. 商店在車站對面。

The people sitting opposite us looked very familiar. 坐在我們對面的那些人看上去很面熟。

注：用作介詞的 opposite 有時也可后接介詞 to。如：

He sat opposite (to) her during the meal. 吃飯的時候他坐在她的對面。

3. 用作副詞，意為“在對面”、“在相反位置”。如：

The Browns live just opposite. 布朗一家就住在對面。

4. 用作名詞，意為“相反的事物”，是可數名詞，但其單數形式常與 the 連用。如：

Hot and cold are opposites. 冷與熱相反。

Light is the opposite of heavy. 輕與重相反。

◆order v. & n.

1. 表示“命令”、“吩咐”，可用作動詞或名詞；注意相應的賓語從句、表語從句、同位語從句等用虛擬語氣(should+v. )。如：

The policeman ordered her to stop. 警察命令她停下。

His order is that all the soldiers should start at once. 他的命令就是所有的士兵馬上出發。

他命令她馬上去。

正：He ordered her to go at once.

正：He ordered that she (should) go at once.

老板吩咐這工作必須按時完成。

正：The boss ordered the work (to be) finished in time.

正：The boss ordered that the work (should) be finished in time.

2. 表示“訂購”，也可用作動作和名詞，注意以下常用句型：

我向這家工廠定購了500雙鞋。

正：They ordered 500 pairs of shoes from the factory.

正：They placed an order for 500 pairs of shoes with the factory.

注：有時表示“點菜”(也可用作名詞或動詞)。如：

May I have your order, please? 請問你要點什么菜?

What shall I order for you? Steak or fish? 我給你叫什么菜? 是牛排還是魚?
