3. 表示“順序”、“秩序”、“整齊”，只用作名詞(不可數)，注意以下常見搭配：in order(按序，整齊)，in good (bad) order(有/無條理)，keep order(維持秩序)，out of order(壞了，不運轉)，in order of size (date, time) (按大小/年代/時間順序排列)

4. 比較 in order to & in order that：兩者都表示目的，但結構不同：前者后接動詞原形，后者后接句子。如：

In order to make money, he went to the South. 為了賺錢，他去了南方。

In order that he should not be late, his mother woke him at 6. 為了讓他不讓遲到，他母親六點就叫醒了他。

注：in order to do sth 的否定式為 in order not to do sth而不是 not in order to do sth。如：

He came in quietly in order not to wake his wife. 他輕輕 進來，以免把他妻子吵醒。

注：以上兩類句型常可互換。如：

我們使用計算機是為了節約時間。

正：We used the computer in order to save time.

正：We used the computer in order that we might save time.

我努力工作是為了讓兒子上大學。

正：I worked hard in order for my son to go to college.

正：I worked hard in order that my son can go to college.

◆other pron. & adj.

1. 基本義為“其他的(人或物)”、“別的(人或物)”，表特指時其前用定冠詞，表泛指時其前不用冠詞；用于單數時后接單數名詞或不接詞(即用作代詞)，用于復數時后接復數名詞或用 others 這樣的形式。如：

Shut the other eye, too. 另一只眼也閉上。(單數特指)

It is not Tom but some other boy. 那不是湯姆，而是別的哪個男孩。(單數泛指)

Other people [Others] may not think that way. 別的人可能不這樣想。(復數泛指)

I have seen two of the films, but not the others. 我只看過其中的兩部電影，其余的沒看過。(復數特指)

注：可以說 one other friend(另外一個朋友)，some other

place(另外某個地方)等，但是不能說 an other book, 要表示此義，須用 another book。

2. other 與數詞連用時，通常應放在數詞之后；但若有定冠詞修飾，則也可放數詞之前。如：

他又買了兩本英語詞典。

正: He’s bought two other English dictionaries.

誤: He’s bought other two English dictionaries.

我不喜歡另外的那兩本書。

正: I don’t like the other two books.

正: I don’t like the two other books.

以上句子有時也可用 more 或 another 的適當結構替換。如：

正: He’s bought two more English dictionaries.

正: He’s bought another two English dictionaries.

3. other 與 all, some, any, every, no, the 以及物主代詞等限定詞連用時，應置于其后；其后若需再接名詞，該名詞根據情況可用單數或復數。如：

Ask some other people. 問問別人吧。

Come some other day. 改日再來吧。

Open your other eye. 睜開另一只眼睛。

Have you any other question(s)? 你還有其他的問題嗎?

All other boys are in the classroom. 所有其他的男孩子都在教室里。

注：every other 還可用來表示“每隔一……”的意思。如：

every other day 每隔一天

every other year 每隔一年

every other line 每隔一行

4. others 與 some 對比使用時，others 表示 some(一些) 的含義。如：

Some say yes, and others say no. (=Some say yes, and some say no. ) 有人說對，有人說不對。

Some people came by car; others came on foot. 有些人是坐汽車來的，有些人是走路來的。
