2. 表示由于某方面的欠款，用介詞 for。如：

He still owes (us) for the goods he received last month. 他上個月收到貨物，現在還欠著(我們)的款呢。

表示“欠款”，有時用作不及物動詞。如：

He owes (me) for my work. 他欠我的工資。

3. 表示“應歸功于”時，若其直接賓語是一個從句，注意用形式賓語 it。如：

I owe it to you that I am still alive. 多虧有你我才仍然活著。

◆own adj.

1. 用于形容詞性物主代詞之后以加強語氣。如：

The house is my own. 這房子是我自己的。

This is my own house. 這是我自己的房子。

注：以下兩句同義：

我喜歡有一個(完全)屬于自己的房間。

正：I’d love to have my (very) own room.

正：I’d love to have a room of my (very) own.

2. 其前通常不能沒有物主代詞。如：

他煮了自己的早飯。

誤：He cooked (an, the) own breakfast.

正：He cooked his own breakfast.

3. 其后不接代詞 one。如：

不要用我的梳子，用你自己的。

誤：Don’t use my comb. Use your own one.

正：Don’t use my comb. Use your own.

1. 表示“頁”，注意以下各句搭配的介詞：

Open your books at [to] page 15. 請翻到15頁。

There’s a picture of a ship on page 15. 在第15頁有張一艘船的照片。

It is found at pages 128 to 130 of this book. 它在本書的128頁至130頁上。

2. 使用縮略式時注意：單數略作p.，復數略作pp.。比較：

“第55頁”可譯為 page 55 或 p. 55

“第 3，4，5 頁”可譯為 pages 3，4，and 5 或 pp. 3-5

◆pain n. & v.

1. 表示身體某部位的疼痛，可用作可數或不可數名詞。如：

I have (a) pain in the stomach. /I have pains in the stomach. 我胃痛。

但是若泛指一般意義的疼痛(通常與某些介詞連用)，則為不可數名詞。如：

The boy cried with pain. 這男孩痛得哭了起來。

I couldn’t sleep for pain. 我痛得睡不著。

2. 表示精神或感情上的痛苦，是不可數名詞。如：

It gave us much pain to learn of the sad news. 聽到這個不幸的消息我們十分痛苦。

3. 用于引申義，表示“努力”、“勞苦”，要用復數形式；用作主語，謂語通常用復數；可用 no, great, much 等修飾(但是不能用many 修飾)。如：

Great pains have been taken to do it. 干這事費了不少苦心。

He wrote the book with great [much] pains. 他漚心嚦血寫了這本書。

比較以下同義句型：

他盡力設法做好自己的工作。

正：He was at great pains to do his work well.

正：He took great pains to do his work well.

正：He went to great pains to do his work well.

正：He took great pains in doing his work well.

正：He took great pains with [over] his work.
