1. 用作代詞，用來代替可數(shù)名詞(不能代替不可數(shù)名詞)。用法上需注意以下幾點:

(1) 單獨使用，表示泛指(非特指)意義，此時單數(shù)用 one, 復(fù)數(shù)要用 some。如：

He had a lot of dictionaries and lent me one (some). 他有很多詞典，還借給了我一本(幾本)。

A：Did any letters come for me? 有我的信嗎?

B：Yes, some (one) came for you this morning. 有，今天早上 來了幾封(一封)你的信。

(2) 受受定語修飾，視情況可表示泛指意義也可表示特指意義，此時單數(shù)用 one, 復(fù)數(shù)要用 ones。如：

Open another window, the one on the left. 請再開一扇窗戶，左邊那一扇。(表特指)

I want some large ones, not small ones. 我想要些大的，不是小的。(表泛指)

注：單數(shù)的 one 可受指示代詞 this 和 that的修飾，不管它是否帶有形容詞；但復(fù)數(shù)的 ones 在沒有連用形容詞的情況下，很少受指示代詞 these 或 those 的修飾。如：

Which book would you like, this one or that one? 你喜歡哪本書，這本還是那本?

Which books would you like, these or those? 你喜歡哪些書，這本還是那本? (很少說……these ones or those ones?)

但是若有形容詞修飾則必須有 one(s)。如：

I want this red one. /I want these red ones.

另外，無論是單數(shù)的 one 還是復(fù)數(shù)的 ones, 通常都不受物主代詞或名詞所有格的修飾，除非其前有描繪性形容詞。如：

誤：My one is red. / Tom’s ones are white.

正：Mine is [are] red. / Tom’s are [is] white.

正：My new one is red. /Tom’s new ones are white.

同時，復(fù)數(shù)的 ones 在沒有形容詞修飾的情況下，不能受 some, several, dozen 等的修飾。如：

誤：some ones /several ones /dozen ones

正：some old ones /several cheap ones /a dozen red ones

2. 在正式文體中，one 可用來泛指“人們”、“任何人”( 通常沒有修飾語)。如：

One can not succeed at this unless one tries hard. 除非努力爭取，否則就不可能在這一方面取得成功。

Modesty helps one to go forward, whereas conceit make sone lag behind. 虛心使人進步，驕傲使人落后。

注：相應(yīng)的所有格和反身代詞可用 one’s 和oneself, 但在美國英語中常用 his 和 himself 代之。如：

One must love one’s [his] country. 誰都必須愛國。

One shouldn’t be too hard on oneself [himself]. 一個人不應(yīng)該太難為自己。

用 one 泛指“人們”是一種比較正式的用法，在口語或非正式文體中通常用 you。如：

One can’t be too careful, can one? 小心為妙，可不是嗎?

You can’t be too careful, can you? 小心為妙，可不是嗎?

◆oneself pron.

1. 作為 one的反身代詞，根據(jù)所指詞的人稱、性別、單復(fù)數(shù)等的變化可以有：myself(我自己)，himself(他自己)，herself(她自己)，yourself(你自己)，itself(它自己)，ourselves(我們自己)，yourselves(你們自己)，themselves (他(她，它)們自己)
