你會用 the fact 嗎

the fact 的本義是“事實”，如：

The fact is that he doesn’t really try. 事實是他沒有做真正的努力。

He felt it his duty to mention the fact to her. 他感到有責任向她提及此事。

If he had known the facts, he could have told us what to do. 如果他了解情況他就會告訴我們該怎么辦了。

但the fact用于本義的用法，并不難理解，在考試中也很少直接考查；在寫作時直接用其本義也不算高明。但是，相比之下，the fact的以下三個輔助用法則顯得非常重要——正確理解其意思和熟練常握其用法不僅對于理解閱讀理解中的難句會有直接的幫助，而且還會有助于同學們在書面表達中創(chuàng)造性地寫出一些讓你提高作文“檔次”的“高級結構”。

一、用于避免句子結構“頭輕腳重”

在許多情況下，當語義上需要用一個較復雜的that從句用主語時，若直接將其置于句首位置，則會顯得“頭輕腳重”。這時，我們通常采用的辦法便是使用形式主語it來改變句子結構。如：

That he had no girl friends worried his parents a lot.= It worried his parents a lot that he had no girl friends. 他沒有女朋友，這件事使他父母非常不安。

That he has fully recovered makes me feel good.=It makes me feel good that he has fully recovered. 他已痊愈，真令我高興。

That he had not said anything surprised everybody.=It surprised everybody that he had not said anything. 他一言不發(fā)，這使大家很吃驚。

用形式主語改變句子結構是許多同學都可能想得到的方式，屬通常思維，乃常規(guī)表達。但如果借助the fact這一輔助手段，按以下方式改寫句子，則會給人以耳目一新的感覺，許多閱卷老師會將其劃入“高級結構”的范疇。如：

The fact that he had no girl friends worried his parents a lot.

The fact that he has fully recovered makes me feel good.

The fact that he had not said anything surprised everybody.
