▲add (…) to 增加,給……增加(添加) This adds to our difficulties. 這增加了我們的困難。 He added the wood to the fire. 他給火添加木柴。 It adds to my pleasure to see you here today. 今天在這里見到你我格外高興。 ▲admit to 承認(rèn) He admitted to the murder. 他供認(rèn)了謀殺罪。 He admitted to having taken the money. 他承認(rèn)拿了那筆錢。 【注】有時可省略其中的介詞 to。如: He admitted (to) opening my letter. 他承認(rèn)拆過我的信。 ▲agree to 同意 He agreed to the plan (the date). 他同意了這個計(jì)劃(日期)。 We agreed to their arrangement. 我們同意了他們的安排。 I was forced to agree to it, but at heart I didn’t quite agree with it. 我被迫答應(yīng),但內(nèi)心并不完全同意。 ▲amount to 等于,共計(jì),共達(dá) The cost amounted to $500. 費(fèi)用共達(dá)500美元。 His remarks amounted to criticism of me. 他的話等于是批評我。 This amounts to cheating her. 這等于是欺騙她。 ▲apologize to 向……道歉 Apologize to your sister. 去給你姐姐賠個不是。 I’ve come to apologize to you. 我來向你道歉。 ▲apply to 向……申請(請求);適合于;運(yùn)用到 He applied to them for help. 他向他們求助。 What you said doesn’t apply to me. 你說的不適合我。 You can’t apply this rule to every case. 你不能將這條規(guī)則運(yùn)用到所有的情況。 ▲compare … to 把……比作 Life is compared to voyage. 人生好比航海。 Shakespeare compared the world to a stage. 莎士比亞把世界比作舞臺。 ▲devote … to 把……奉獻(xiàn)給,致力于 He devoted himself entirely to music. 他把自己完全獻(xiàn)給音樂。 He devoted his life to promoting world peace. 他一生致力于促進(jìn)世界和平。 ▲lead (…) to 通往;把……領(lǐng)往 All roads lead to Rome . 條條道路通羅馬。 The girl led her little brother to school. 那個女孩領(lǐng)小弟弟去上學(xué)。 Chance led him to London . 偶然的機(jī)會使他來到了倫敦。 ▲limit … to 把……限制在(到) Try to limit your talk to ten minutes. 請盡量把話在10分鐘內(nèi)講完。 I shall limit myself to three aspects of the subject. 我僅探討這一問題的三個方面。 You ought to limit your activities to recording the facts. 你的活動應(yīng)限制在記錄事實(shí)的范圍內(nèi)。 ▲listen to 聽,聽信 They refused to listen to the old man’s counsel. 他們不聽老人的勸告。 He would rather listen to others than talk himself. 他寧愿聽別人談而不愿自己談。 ▲object to 反對,不喜歡 He objects to being treated like a child. 他討厭被當(dāng)成小孩子看待。 Some members of the committee objected to our proposal. 有些委員反對我們的提案。 ▲occur to 想到,想起 An idea has occurred to me. 我有主意了。 It never occurred to her to ask anyone. 她從未想到問問他人。 ▲owe … to 把……歸(功)于;欠 I owe my life to you. 全虧你我才能活下來。 She owes her success to hard work. 她把成功歸因于辛勤工作。 Pam still owes 5 dollars to me. 帕姆還欠我5美元。 I owe an apology to him. 我應(yīng)該向他道歉。
