altogether, all together, together

以上三個詞很容易混淆。

altogether的意思是①完全地，全部地（entirely, wholly）；總而言之，總之（on the whole）；②總共，常同數(shù)詞連用，這時all together也有這個意思，二者可以換用。如：

I don’t altogether agree with you. 我并不完全同意你。

We are fifty altogether. 我們總共五十人。

Altogether, the students have done very well. 總的來說，學生們做得相當好。

I have put the books all together in the drawer. 我把這些書一起放在這抽屜里。

together主要表示“在一起（in company），同時（at the same time）”的意思，可以與with連用，引起附加部分。如：

Let’s go to school together. 咱們一起上學吧。

He sold the house, together with the furniture. 他把房子連同家具都賣了。

Tom, together with his parents, goes to church every Sunday. 每周日湯姆和他父母一起去做禮拜。

always, ever, frequently, often, usually

以上幾個詞都是頻度副詞，表示“經(jīng)常，通常，總是”。

always表示“總是，永遠”，著重說明行為在不斷延續(xù)中的反復性，與進行時連用，帶有強烈的感情色彩。如：

We have always bought the best coffee. 我們一直都是買最好的咖啡。

The sun always rises in the east. 太陽總是從東方升起。

That boy is always asking whys. 那個男孩總是問這問那個沒完。

ever作“永遠，始終”（at all times）解，與always相連，側重于“始終不變，千篇一律”。如：

Natural law is ever to be reckoned with. 自然法則是永遠不可忽視的。

often表示“經(jīng)常，多次地”（many times），著重一件事發(fā)生的次數(shù)，含有頻頻重復的意味，而不考慮其發(fā)生間隔多少時間。如：

—How often have you been there a month?

—Twice.

——一個月你到那里去幾次？

——兩次。

I met him quite often when I was in that firm. 我在那家公司時常見到他。

frequently也有“經(jīng)常”的含義，著重行為的經(jīng)常反復、頻繁發(fā)生，尤指每次行為間隔的時間非常短。如：

If you don’t write me more frequently, I shall feel out of touch with you. 如果你不常給我寫信，我會和你有疏遠的感覺。

usually表示“通常”，含有慣常的意味，指已形成習慣并很少有例外的行為，常表間時間的經(jīng)常性程度。如：

Mr. White usually helps me with my English at weekends. 懷特先生通常在周末幫我學英語。

Tom usually gets up early. 湯姆通常早起。

a most, the most

a most后可接形容詞修飾的單數(shù)名詞。most相當于very“十分，很”，不是構成最高級的修飾語。如：

Children in China lead a most happy life. 中國的兒童過著非常幸福的生活。

the most是形容詞最高級構成的成分之一，表示“最……”。如：

This book is the most interesting of the three. 這本書是這三本中最有趣的。

注：如果most前無定冠詞the，可以表示“最”或“很，十分”的意思；表示第二個意思時，被修飾的形容詞必須是表示人的看法的主觀形容詞。如：

The present world situation is most favourable for the people.  當前世界形勢對人民十分有利。

This lesson is most difficult. 這一課最（很）難。

among, between

among的意思是“在……當中”，指在三者或三者以上的人或物當中；between的意思是“在……之間”，指在兩者之間。如：

He sat among the children. 他坐在孩于們中間。

He sat between you and me. 他坐在你我之間。

between也可表示在三者以上之間，但這時指三者以上的兩兩之間。如：

The village lies between the three mountains. 這個村莊位于三座山中間。

He is sitting between Wang Ling，Liu Ming and Li Hua. 他坐在王玲、劉明和李華之間。
