三個表示“充分利用”的短語

高中英語中有三個表示“充分利用”的短語——make the best of, make the most of, make good [full] use of。它們結構相近，意思相似，你會使用它們嗎？你知道它們有什么區別嗎？

1. make the best of

一般詞典將其譯為“充分利用”“善用”“盡力而為”，但英語詞典對該短語的解釋是to accept a situation which is not very good, and do whatever you can to make it better（接受不是很好的狀況，并設法使它變得變好），指的是在境況不理想的情況下而盡力而為，即盡量往好處努力，具體翻譯時可以靈活處理。如：

Make the best of your limited time. 盡可能善用你有限的時間。

We must make the best of the few natural resources we have. 我們一定要盡可能地利用我們所擁有的一點自然資源。

We must try to make the best of things until we can afford a bigger house. 在我們能買得起一所較大的房子之前，我們應該盡量利用目前的條件把住處安排得像樣一些。

We’ll have to spend the night in this awfully place, so we might as well make the best of it. 我們得在這鬼地方住一晚，所以還是將就一點吧。

注意：該結構的best前必須要有定冠詞。

2. make the most of

該短語通常譯為“充分利用”，但英語詞典對該短語的解釋是profit as much as one can from…（從……獲取盡可能多的好處），即不管所處的境況有利還是不利，一定要把所有的好處和優勢利用到極致。如：

She doesn’t know how to make the most of herself. 她不知道如何充分表現自己。

It’s my first holiday for two years so I’m going to make the most of it. 這是我兩年來的第一個假日，所以要好好利用一下。

It’s my first trip abroad so I’m going to make the most of it. 這是我第一次出國，我要充分利用這個機會。

She’s not really beautiful, but she makes the most of her looks. 她并不十分漂亮，但很會打扮。

說明：該結構的most前也必須要有定冠詞。make the best of與make the most of的區別是，前者的語境背景通常是一個“消極的”（如不好、不利、不足、不令人滿意等），而后者的語境背景則沒有特別限制，可以是“消極的”，也可以是“積極的”。所以在有些情況下，make the most of 可以代替 make the best of。如：

You have only a short holiday, so make the most of it. 你只有很短的假期，所以應該好好利用這段時間。

We had to make the most of our rather slender resources. 我們只好充分利用我們極為有限的資源。

3. make good [full] use of

該結構中的use前不用冠詞。一般只說make use of，其意為“利用”“使用”，其用法與用作動詞的 use 意思相同。如：

We must make use of our untapped reservoirs of talent. 我們必須利用我們尚未利用的人才。

She makes use of people she meets as raw material for her fiction.(www.hz123456.com)

她把她所遇見的人作為她創作小說的素材。

若要加強語氣，則在use前加上修飾語good, full等，其意為“充分利用”“充分使用”。其實質用法仍與動詞use用法相同，只是語氣稍強而已。如：

Make full use of every chance you have to speak English. 要充分利用一切機會說英語。

We will make good use of her talents. 我們要很好地發揮她的才能。

We could make better use of our resources. 我們可以更有效地利用我們的資源。
