表因果關系的并列連詞

英語中表示因果關系的并列連詞主要有for和so兩個。

1. 并列連詞for的用法

并列連詞for表示原因，意為“因為”“由于”。如：

The days were short, for it was now December. 白天很短，因為現在已經是12月。

I decided to stop and have lunch—for I was feeling hungry. 我決定停下來吃飯——因為我覺得餓了。

He must be out, for there is no light in the room. 他準是出去了，因為屋里沒有燈。

She does not go out in the winter, for she feels the cold a great deal. 她冬天不出門，因為他特別怕冷。

We listened eagerly, for he brought news of our families. 他給我們帶來了家里的消息，我們都迫不及待地聽著。

2. 并列連詞so的用法

并列連詞so表示結果，意為“所以”“因此”。如：

It’s very cold, so wear a heavy coat. 外邊很冷，因此穿一件厚大衣吧。

There were no buses, so I came by bicycle. 沒有公共汽車，所以我就騎自行車來了。

The door was locked, so we couldn’t get in. 門上鎖了，所以我們進不去。

It was dark, so I couldn’t see what was happening. 天很黑，所以我看不見發生了什么事。

I’m off on holiday, so I won’t be seeing you for a bit. 我要外出度假，所以有一段時間我就見不著你了。

He told me to do it and so I did it. 他叫我那么做，所以我就做了。

She wrote a famous book, and so won a place in history. 她寫了一本名著，所以在歷史上有一席之地。

漢語可以說“因為……所以……”，但英語中表示結果的并列連詞so不能與表示原因的從屬連詞because連用，如不能說：

Because it’s very cold, so wear a heavy coat.
