Good 和 Well 的糾葛

【問】在人教版英語選修六第3單元課文中，有如下一個句子： Some people believe they feel happier or more relaxed after they have a cigarette and so they begin to think that they only feel good when they smoke. 在這句子中，feel good 是什么意思？我們知道 feel well 表示身體好，那么 feel good 也表示身體好嗎？

【答】good 和 well 是一對最常用而且容易混淆的同義詞。簡單的說，兩個詞都表示“好”，前者是形容詞，后者是副詞。例如：　　

Tom speaks good English. （good 是形容詞修飾English，作定語）　　

Tom speaks English well. （well 是副詞修飾speaks，作狀語）　　

又如：　　

The soup tastes good. （不用 well ）　　

The car runs well.（不用good）　　

The dress fits well and looks good.（good 和 well 不能互換，因為well是副詞，good是形容詞）　　

但是，well 也可用作形容詞，表示人的身體“好”（只作表語，不作定語）；good 不表示身體好，而是指人的品質(zhì)好，試比較：　　

The old man is good. 那位老人心底善良。　　

The old man is well. 那位老人身體健康。　　

feel good 和 feel well:　　

指人身體時，feel well指身體康復(fù)，feel good指病情好轉(zhuǎn)。一位患有慢性病的病人可以對醫(yī)生說 I feel good today.（我今天感覺不錯），這句話暗示著病痛相對減輕了。然而，如果病人確信病癥已經(jīng)徹底消失了，就說I feel well today.（我今天感到全好了）　　

feel good 除了可以指“暫時的健康好轉(zhuǎn)”外，但還有別的意思。你提出的句子應(yīng)該這樣翻譯和理解：“有的人認為，抽了一支煙后，他就會感到輕松愉快，于是就以為抽煙才能使人感覺良好。”feel good 在這個句子中表示“感覺良好”，與feel well是大不相同的。　　

very good 和 very well:　　

這也是一組日常用語，它們的區(qū)別是：Very good 用來表示“甘心情愿”的同意，相當(dāng)于 of course, certainly，例如：

—Please send this letter off at once.

—Very good, Sir.　　

Very well 用來表示“不情愿”的同意，相當(dāng)于all right（但我并不特別想做），例如：

—You ought to take a coat with you.

—Oh, very well, if I must.
