四、修飾介詞短語

能用well加強(qiáng)語氣的介詞主要是那些有動(dòng)態(tài)意味或有強(qiáng)弱比較意味的介詞。如：

1. well above：意思是“遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)在……之上”“遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)高于”。如：

the temperature was well above freezing. 溫度遠(yuǎn)在冰點(diǎn)以上。

His test results are well above average. 他的測(cè)驗(yàn)成績遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)高于平均水平。

2. well after：意思是“遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)在……之后”。如：

Franklin did not turn up until well after midnight. 富蘭克林直到午夜過后很久才出現(xiàn)。

It was well after midnight by the time Anne returned to her apartment. 安妮回到寓所的時(shí)候早就過了午夜。

3. well ahead of：意思是“遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)領(lǐng)先”“遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)超過”。如：

Applications are well ahead of last year’s. 提出的申請(qǐng)數(shù)量大大超過去年。

Paula finished the race well ahead of the other runners. 葆拉遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)領(lǐng)先其他選手跑完了比賽。

4. well before：意思是“遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)在……之前”。如：

They’ll be back well before dark. 他們會(huì)在天黑前早早返回。

She admitted defeat well before all the votes had been counted. 選票還遠(yuǎn)未統(tǒng)計(jì)完，她就承認(rèn)競(jìng)選失敗了。

5. well below：意思是是“遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)在……之下”“遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)低于”。如：

Radiation is well below the permitted level. 輻射量遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)低于規(guī)定水平。

Those houses are badly built; they are well below the necessary standard. 那些房屋建筑質(zhì)量很差，遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)達(dá)不到起碼的標(biāo)準(zhǔn)。

6. well beyond：意思是“遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)超過”“大大超出”。如：

the questions were well beyond the average adult. 這些問題大大超出了普通成年人的理解水平。

The loss has not yet been calculated accurately, but it is believed to be well beyond a hundred million dollars. 損失還沒計(jì)算清楚，但是相信會(huì)遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)超出100萬美元。

7. well in advance：意思是“早早地”。如：

It is a good idea to place your order well in advance. 早早就提前下單是個(gè)好主意。

You’ll have to book up well in advance if you want to see that show. 要想看那場(chǎng)演出，你得早早預(yù)定座位。

8. well into：具體意思視into的意思而定。如：

Rub the cream well into your skin. 將乳膏抹勻，使皮膚充分吸收。

She had her first child well into middle age. 她初為人母時(shí)早已步入了中年。

He works from dawn to dusk, and often well into the night. 他從早到晚地工作，經(jīng)常工作到深夜。

9. well out of：具體意思視out of的意思而定。如：

The cat stayed well out of range of the children. 那只貓離孩子們遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)的。

The shelf is so high it is well out of my reach. 架子太高, 我根本夠不著。
