動詞mean的用法小歸納

一是表示“意思是，有……的意思”。例如：

What does this word mean?  這個字是什么意思?

This is what is meant by “failure is the mother of success”. “失敗是成功之母”就是這個意思。

You mean it can be cured? 你的意思是能治好？

二是表示“指”，例如：

Whom do you mean by “they”? 你說“他們”，指的是誰？

I mean the red one, not the green one. 我說的是那個紅的，不是那個綠的。

三是表示“意味著”，后面可以接名詞、動名詞、從句。例如：

Silence means consent. 沉默就是同意。

To persevere means victory！堅持就是勝利。

To take it apart now would mean wasting a lot of labour. （接動名詞）現在把它拆卸開，就意味著浪費大量的勞動力。

Revolution means liberating the productive forces. 革命意味著解放生產力。

This mean we have to wait another week or so.（接從句）這就意味著我們還得等一個星期左右。

注意下列情況：作為“意味著”含義，可以跟復合結構。 例如：

This also meant many smaller ditches to be dug and more fields to be leveled. 這意味著要挖許多小水渠和平整更多土地。

四是表示“打算；有……意圖”，后面接名詞、代詞、不跟賓語、動詞不定式，不定式的復合結構。例如：

Anybody could see that he meant no harm. 誰都看得出他沒有惡意。

They probably meant well. 他們或許用心是好的。

What do you mean to do with it? 你打算把它怎樣處理？

I don’t mean to say we are perfect. 我不是說我們已經十全十美了。

We had meant to leave on Monday, but have stayed on. （與完成時連用，表“本打算”）我們本來是想早來的。

He has always meant to get it repaired.  他一直是想請人修一修的。

I thought you meant me to come with you.（接不定式的復合結構）我還意為你打算讓我跟你一道去呢。
