-ing分詞作定語與作狀語“三弄清”

一、弄清-ing分詞作定語的兩種功能

功能一：用于表示被修飾名詞的動作或特征——這就是傳統語法中說的現在分詞。如：

I learnt another astonishing fact. 我了解到另一個令人吃驚的事實。

All bedrooms in this hotel have hot and cold running water. 這家旅館每間臥室都有冷熱自來水。

功能二：用于表示被修飾名詞的用途或目的——這就是傳統語法中說的動名詞。如：

The doctor told me not take sleeping pills. 醫生叫我不要服安眠藥。

Guests have free use of the hotel swimming pool. 客人可免費使用賓館的游泳池。

比較：

a sleeping car (=a car for sleeping)　臥車（sleeping用于說明car的用途）

a sleeping baby (=a baby who is sleeping) 睡覺的嬰兒（sleeping用于說明baby的動作）

二、弄清-ing分詞作定語的兩種位置

位置一：前置。單個的-ing分詞作定語，通常都置于被修飾名詞之前（例句見上面）。

位置二：后置。若是-ing分詞短語作定語，通常都置于被修飾名詞之后（可轉化為定語從句）。如：

There were some children swimming (=who were swimming) in the river. 有些小孩在河里游泳。

The taxi taking (=which took) us to the airport broke down. 送我們去機場的出租車中途壞了。

三、弄清-ing分詞作狀語的九種用法

-ing分詞用作狀語時有九種作用——表示時間、原因、條件、讓步、方式、伴隨、目的、程度和結果。如：

用法一：表示時間

Putting down my newspaper, I walked over to the window. 我放下報紙，走到窗前。

用法二：表示原因

Being unable to help in any other way, I gave her some money. 由于無法給她什么別的幫助，我就給了她一些錢。

用法三：表示條件

Adding them all up, we can find the answer. 如果把它們加起來，我們就可以得到答案。

用法四：表示讓步

Knowing all this, they made me pay for the damage. 他們盡管了解這一切，還是要我賠償損失。

用法五：表示方式

You made me look so small correcting me in front of everybody. 你當眾糾正我的錯誤，弄得我很難為情。

用法六：表示伴隨

He walked along in front of me, holding the lantern. 他提著燈籠走在我前面。

用法七：表示目的

I often go shopping with mother on Sundays. 星期天我常跟媽媽買東西。

說明：現在分詞用作目的狀語的用法非常有限，主要見于那些表示人們所從事的活動方面的動詞，如boating, climbing, fishing, hunting, riding, sailing, shopping, shooting, skating, skiing, swimming, walking, washing等(www.hz123456.com)。

用法八：表示程度

He wore his thin coat in freezing cold days and fell ill soon. 他在冰冷的天還穿著單薄的大衣，不久就病倒了。

說明：現在分詞作程度狀語的用法也很有限，主要見于以下表達（其中的現在分詞相當于very）：boiling hot，burning hot，freezing cold，soaking wet等。

用法九：表示結果

I fell, striking my head against the door and cutting it. 我摔了個跟頭，頭撞在了門上，劃了個口子。
