He came running back to tell us the news.他跑著回來告訴我們這個消息。（running為現在分詞，作came back的方式狀語。即：“跑著回來”）

The children came running when she called them. 她一叫喚，孩子們就跑過來了。（running為現在分詞，作came back的方式狀語。即：“跑著過來”）

I crossed the street to avoid meeting Tom, but he saw me and came rushing towards me .我穿過馬路以便避開湯姆，但他看到了我并朝我跑過來。（rushing為現在分詞，作came的方式狀語。即：“朝我沖來”）

The leaves came raining down.樹葉如雨般掉下來。（raining為現在分詞，作came down的方式狀語。即：“如雨一般下來”）

The bombs came raining down.炸彈雨點般落下。（raining為現在分詞，作came down的方式狀語。即：“如雨一般下來”）

具備名詞性質的動名詞，可以作放在及物動詞之后作賓語；但是，在不及物動詞之后的“動詞-ing形式”，則是現在分詞作狀語。

以下例句則是動名詞作及物動詞的賓語，不是狀語：

He suggested spending the evening with a worker. 他建議跟一名工人一起度過那個晚上。

She couldn’t help laughing when she heard the joke. 聽到那個笑話時，她禁不住大笑起來。

We don’t allow smoking here. 我們這兒不許吸煙。

He hasn’t finished reading the science fiction.他還沒讀完那部科幻小說。

We must practise speaking English. 我們必須練習說英語。

Sophia likes helping others and being helped.索菲婭喜歡幫助別人，也喜歡被幫助。

I first considered phoning him, but then decided to see him. 我開始想打電話給他，但后來決定見他。

Tom tried to avoid meeting her. 湯姆設法避免見到她。

Tom tried to avoid being met by her. 湯姆避免被她碰見。

除了作及物動詞的賓語外，動名詞還可作介詞的賓語：

My parents objected to my marrying him. 我父母反對我與他結婚。

I’m looking forward to your coming. 我正盼望著你的到來。

My husband is fond of playing basketball. 我丈夫喜歡打籃球。

Yuan Longping devotes all his energy to studying rice. 袁隆平把他所有的精力獻給水稻研究。

Little Lily was afraid of being left alone at home. 小莉莉害怕被單獨留在家里。
