dare用作情態動詞和實義動詞的用法

1. 用作情態動詞，主要用于否定句、疑問句或條件從句中。如：

They dare not tell the truth. 他們不敢說真話。

Dare you say that to the boss? 你敢向上司說這種話嗎?

How dare you ask me such a question? 你怎么敢問我這樣的問題?

If you dare speak to me like that again, you will be sorry. 你敢再這樣對我說，你會后悔的。

注意，I dare say 是習慣說法，并不一定要譯為“我敢說”。它所表示的是一種不肯定的語氣，常譯為“很可能”“大概”“我想”等。有時用作反語。如：

I dare say (that) you are right. 我想你是對的。

Oh, you mean to win? I dare say you will. 啊，你想打贏?我且看你贏吧。

作為情態動詞，dare 沒有單數第三人稱形式，但有過去式。如：

He dared not go near the place. 他不敢走近那個地方。

How dared he tell everybody I was looking for a new job! 他竟敢告訴每個人我在找新工作！

但是盡管有過去式，人們還是常用現在式表示過去或后接完成式動詞。如：

Mother dare(d) not tell father she’d given away his old jacket. 母親不敢告訴父親她把他的舊上衣送人了。

I daren’t have done it yesterday, but I think I dare now. 我昨天不敢做此事，但我想我現在敢做了。

2. 用作實義動詞，意為“敢于”，可以有各種詞形變化，其后多接帶 to 的不定式（有時 to 也可省去），可用于肯定句、否定句、疑問句以及各種從句。如：

He didn’t dare (to) go. 他不敢去。

We must dare to think, speak and act. 我們必須敢想，敢說，敢做。

I wonder how he dares (to) say such things. 我納悶他怎么竟敢說出這樣的話來。

The boy stood before the teacher, not daring to look up. 這個小男孩站在老師面前不敢抬頭。

另外，有時還用作及物動詞，表示“激”“向……挑戰”，通常用于dare sb to do sth。如：

I dare you to tell your mother. 我諒你也不敢告訴你母親。

He dared me to jump from the bridge to the river. 他挑唆我，要我從橋上跳下河。
