examination（檢查，考試）的用法與搭配

1. 表示“檢查”，注意以下與動詞和介詞的常用搭配：

He made an examination of the room. 他檢查了房間。

We carried out a medical examination. 我們進行了體格檢查。

2. 表示具體的一次一次的“檢查”或“考試”，它通常是可數(shù)名詞，但有時表示抽象意義的檢查或考試，則為不可數(shù)名詞。如：

On examination I found the goods of poor quality. 我一檢查就發(fā)現(xiàn)了這些貨物質(zhì)量不行。

Admission to this school is by examination. 進入該校須經(jīng)過考試。

3. 用于under examination，其意為“在檢查中”“在審查中”。如：

The prisoner is still under examination. 囚犯仍在受審。

His conduct is under examination. 正在對他的行為進行審查。

4. 表示“考試”，還需注意以下幾點：

(1) 表示參加考試，通常用動詞 take, sit (for), enter (for) 等；表示通過考試或考試及格，通常用動詞pass；表示考試沒通過或沒及格，通常用動詞 fail (in)。如：

About 500 students took [sat, sat for] the examination. 大約有500學生參加了考試。

Of those who took the exam, only thirty percent passed. 參加考試的人中間，只有30%的人通過了。

Both of them failed (in) the examination. 他們倆人考試都沒有及格。

注意，“參加考試”可用動詞 take, 但不用 take part in。

(2) 表示某一方面的考試，可直接用名詞用定語，也可在其后接介詞 in。如：a maths examination（數(shù)學考試），an examination in chemistry（化學考試）。

(3) 我們平時說的“高考”，其實就是指“大學入學考試”，說成英語通常是college entrance examinations，也可說成examinations for college entrance或examinations for admission to college。
