follow 的用法與搭配

1. 表示“跟隨”，可用作及物或不及物動詞。如：

Follow close behind. 緊跟在后面。

Summer follows spring. 春去夏來。

The dog follows me wherever I go. 我不論到哪里，這狗都跟著。

表示某人或某物跟在另一人或另一物后面，一般不與介詞behind 或after 連用，以免構成用詞重復（盡管偶爾可見到這類用法，但在現代英語中很少見，初學者最好不用）。但有時可后接用作副詞的behind。如：

You go ahead. We’ll follow behind. 你們先走，我們隨后就來。

2. 有時與there搭配使用， 構成類似there be的結構。如：

There followed a long silence. 然后是一陣冗長的沉默。

There will follow an interval of five minutes. 隨后將有5分鐘休息。

3. 不要按照漢語習慣，將漢語表達中的“跟著某人做某事”直譯為 follow sb to do sth, 而應根據情況選用適當的句型。如：

我跟他去了車站。

誤：I followed him to go to the station.

正：I followed him to the station.

我跟著他讀生詞。

誤：I followed him to read the new words.

正：I read the new words after him.

4. follow的用法很多，除表示“跟著”外，還可表示“聽從”“遵循”“沿著”“仿效”“聽懂”“明白”等義。如：

Do you follow me? 你能聽懂我的話嗎?

Follow the traffic rules. 遵循交通規則。

We should follow his advice. 我們應該聽他的勸告。

He followed his sister’s example and went to college. 他效仿他的姐姐也進了大學。

Follow this road until you get to the corner, then turn left. 沿著這條路走到拐角處，然后向左拐。
