三、may和can表推測時的區(qū)別

can和may均可表示推測，can主要用于否定句和疑問句，may主要用于肯定句和否定式。盡管兩得均可用于否定句，但是含義不同：

1. 表推測的can’t

can’t表推測時的意思是“不可能”。如：

He can’t be at home. 他不可能在家。

That can’t be Mary—she’s in hospital. 那不可能是瑪麗——她住院了。

She’s very young. She can’t be over twenty. 她非常年輕，不可能超過20歲。

以上各句中的can’t表示“不可能”，是一種語氣很強(qiáng)的否定推測，注意它與can’t表示能力時的意思可不一樣，can’t表示能力時的意思是“不能”“不會”。如：

I can read French, but I can’t speak it. 我能讀懂法語，但不會說。

2. 表推測的may not

may not表推測時的意思是“可能不”。如：

He may not agree. 他可能會不同意。

The water may not be warm enough to swim. 要游泳，這水可能不夠暖和。

It may not rain, but you had better take an umbrella in case. 可能不會下雨，但你最好還是帶把雨傘，以防萬一。

注：當(dāng)表示允許時，may not的意思是“不可以”“不允許”。如：

You may not tell him this. 你不可以告訴他這件事。

People may not pick flowers in the park. 人們不得在公園里攀折花木。

四、may well與may as well

1. may well的用法

主要用于加強(qiáng)推測的語氣，表示具有較大的可能性。如：

What you say may well be true. 你說的很可能是事實(shí)。

That may well have been their intention. 這很可能是他們的意圖。

其中的may也可換成might，但語氣更不確定。如：

He might well lose his job. 他多半會丟了那份工作。

2. may as well的用法

其意思為“不妨”“還是……為好”等。如：

I may as well start at once. 我還不如馬上就動身。

You are here, so you may as well give me a hand. 你們既然在這兒，不如就幫我一下。

其中的may也可換成might，但語氣更不確定。如：

He might as well come with me. 他還不如跟我一起來。

另外，有是還可在as well前加上一個副詞just。如：

Since nobody else wants the job, we might just as well let him have it. 既然誰也不要這份工作，咱們不妨讓他去做吧。
