6. many與 much

兩者都表示“許多”， many 后接復數(shù)可數(shù)名詞，much 后接不可數(shù)名詞。如

Many people hate to do too much work on Sundays. 許多人不喜歡在星期天做太多的工作。

7. none 與no one

none 后可跟of短語，既可指人又可指物，而no one 后通常不接of短語，且只能指人；回答 how many 或 how much 的提問時，通常用 none，而在回答 who 的提問時，通常用 no one 或 nobody；none 作主語時，謂語動詞用單數(shù)或復數(shù)均可，而no one作主語謂語動詞只能是單數(shù)。如：

None of the telephones are [is] working. 所有的電話都壞了。

No one equals him in strength. 論力氣，無人能和他相比。

注：nobody 與 no one 的用法相似，以上關于 no one 的用法也適合 nobody。

8.  every 與 each

every 強調整體，each強調個體；every 指三者或三者以上“每一個”，而 each指兩者或兩者以上的“每一個”；every 只用作定語，不可單獨使用，而each可用作定語也可單獨使用；every不可用作同位語，而each可作同位語；every 可受 almost, nearly 等副詞的修飾，但 each 不能；every 后可接“數(shù)詞(或few)+復數(shù)名詞”表示有反復重復的意思，但each 不能。如：

We each had a bedroom. 我們每人都有一間臥室。

On either side of the river lie corn-fields. 河的兩邊都是玉米地。

She visits her parents every few days. 她每隔幾天就要去看望她父母親一次。

Almost every student has seen the film. 差不多每個學生都看過這部電影。

9. (a) few 與 (a) little

(a) few 后接可數(shù)名詞(復數(shù))，(a) little 后接不可數(shù)名詞；帶有不定冠詞的 a few 和 a little 表示肯定含義，不帶不定冠詞的few 和 little 表示否定含義。如：

Now I have little spare time. 現(xiàn)在我的空余時間很少。

Can you spare me a few minutes? 你能為我挪出幾分鐘時間嗎?

注意以下習語的特殊意思：

what little 僅有的一點

a little=a little bit 少許，少量的

not a little 不少的，相當多的

not a few =quite a few=a good few 許多，相當多

用例如下：

There’s a little bit of time left. 只剩一點兒時間了。

It has given me not a little trouble. 這給帶來不少麻煩。

I spent what little time I had with her. 我僅有的一點時間都是與她一起度過的。

注：little 除用作不定代詞表示“少”(此時后接不可數(shù)名詞)外，還可用作形容詞表示“小”。如：

It’s natural that such little animals eat so little food. 很自然，那樣小的動物吃那樣少的食物。

10. other, the other, another與 others

使用原則是：指單數(shù)時，若泛指用another，若特指用 the other；指復數(shù)時，若泛指用other(后接復數(shù)名詞)或others(其后不接名詞)，若特指用the other (后接復數(shù)名詞)或the others(其后不接名詞)。具體地說可以有以下理解：一定范圍內的兩個，一個用one，另一個用the other；一定范圍內三者，一個用one，另一個用one 或another，第三個用the other；一定范圍內的多者，一個用one，一些用some，其余的用 the others；泛指另一個用another；泛指另外的其他，用 others。如：

Have another drink! 再喝一杯！

I don’t know anything as to the others. 至于其他，我一無所知。

He got double of what the other children did. 他得到的東西是其他小孩的兩倍。

The other team didn’t arrive, so our team won by default. 由于對方球隊未到，我隊以其棄權而獲勝。

注意以下幾個短語的特殊意思：

every other 每隔一……，其他的……都

none other than 不是別的，正是……

no other than 不是別的，正是……

one after the other 一個接一個地，相繼

one from the other 分別，各別

some ... or other 某一個

other than 不同于，除了

the other day 早幾天，幾天前

注：another一般只能表單數(shù)，后接名詞也只能接單數(shù)形式。但是若其后有數(shù)詞或 few 修飾時，則可接復數(shù)名詞。如：

You’d better stay at hospital for another few days. 你最好在醫(yī)院再住幾天。
