不定冠詞a與an的用法區別與易錯說明

1. 基本區別

原則上說，a用于輔音前；an用于元音前。輔音前用a的例子如a bag, a tree, a park, a desk, a pen, a bottle, a room, a tower, a factory, a girl, a boy, a woman, a table 等；元音前用an的例子如：

I want to look up an old friend. 我想去看一位朋友。

He made an obvious mistake. 他犯了一個明顯的錯誤。

She’s had an operation on her foot. 她的腳動了手術。

They made an alliance against him. 他們聯合起來對付他。

I have an American passport. 我有一份美國護照。

She is an official in the Department of Education. 她是教育部的一名官員。

The story derives from an old legend. 這個故事來源于一則古老的傳說。

“Dr” is an abbreviation for “Doctor”.  Dr 是 Doctor 的縮寫詞。

It may rain, but I’ll chance it—I won’t take an umbrella. 可能會下雨，但我冒冒險不帶雨傘。

In an oral English lesson we learn to speak English. 在英語口語課上，我們學習講英語。

He is studying an important problem, and nothing can call away his attention. 他正在研究一個重要問題，什么也不能使他分心。

2. 易錯說明

hour, honest, honor等單詞的拼寫雖然以輔音字母h開頭，但其讀音卻以元音開頭，因此，前面要用an。反過來，有些單詞雖然以元音字母開頭，但其讀音卻以輔音開頭，那么它們的前面應用a而不是an，這些詞常見的有useful, university, usual, European, united, one-eyed, one-way等。

另外，對于數字、字母以及由單詞首字母構成的縮略詞，其前到底是用a還是an，也需根據讀音來確定，如：

We have an 8-hour workday. 我們實行8小時工作制。

The closure of the regional offices was phased over an 18-month period. 地區事務所在18個月內逐步關閉。

They’ve just bought an 18th-century pile in Surrey. 他們剛剛在薩里郡買了一所18世紀的大房子。
