rather和quite放在冠詞前面還是后面

1. 與不定冠詞連用時

當不定冠詞與rather, quite搭配使用時，不定冠詞通常應置于其后。如：

He is in rather a hole. 他處境極為困難。

The performance was rather a failure. 表演頗不成功。

She’s rather a dear. 她是一個相當招人喜歡的姑娘。

She found her new sales job to be quite a challenge. 她發現她的新推銷工作相當難。

The old map is quite a curiosity. 這張舊地圖的確是件珍品。

We had quite a job finding your house. 我們費了很大的勁才找到你的家。

但是，若該結構中的名詞帶有形容詞修飾語，則不定冠詞可放在這些詞語之前或之后。如：

It was rather a busy day. = It was a rather busy day. 那天相當忙。

It’s rather a sad story.= It’s a rather sad story.這是一個頗為悲慘的故事。

That’s rather a silly question.= That’s a rather silly question. 那是個相當愚蠢的問題。

He seems quite a hopeful pupil. = He seems a quite hopeful pupil. 他似乎是個相當有前途的學生。

There was quite a respectable crowd at the match on Saturday.= There was a quite respectable crowd at the match on Saturday.  星期六觀看比賽的人相當多。

但是：

正：He is rather a fool. 他是個大傻瓜。

誤：He is a rather fool.(因為名詞前無形容詞，所以錯誤)

2. 與定冠詞連用時

當定冠詞與rather, quite搭配使用時，定冠詞通常應置于其后。這樣用的rather和quite主要用于加強語氣，其意為“完全”“正是”等。如：

It’s quite the worst play I have ever seen. 這的確是我看過的戲當中最差的出戲。

He’s going quite the wrong way. 他路全走錯了。

That’s not quite the colour I wanted. 那不完全是我要的顏色。

Children’s shoes aren’t cheap—quite the reverse. 兒童的鞋并不便宜——反而更貴。

That’s rather the impression I wanted to give. 那正是我要給人們留下的印象。

但是，若rather或quite需要直接修飾名詞前的形容詞，則也可能置于定冠詞之后，此時的rather或quite表示“相當”。如：

the rather slippery subject of race relations 相當棘手的種族關系問題
