現在分詞作定語的前置與后置

一、現在分詞作定語的前置

在通常情況下，單個的現在分詞作定語時，應位于被修飾的名詞之前，主要有以下用法：

1. 說有動作正在進行。如：

a flying object 飛行中的物體

a buring building 正在燃燒的大樓

There’s a growing need for computers. 對電腦的需求日益增長。

2. 說明被修飾名詞的性質或特征等。如：

What a boring book! 多沒意思的書啊！

He gave me a warning cough. 他以咳嗽警告我。

His liver was in a shocking state. 他肝的狀況糟透了。

She is a charming child. 她是一個招人愛的孩子。

Ivy has a climbing habit. 常春藤有攀緣向上的習性。

This is a very charming village. 這是一座迷人的村莊。

This is a pressing question. 這是一個緊迫的問題。

It was a pressing meeting and all members had to attend. 這是一次緊急會議，所有成員都得參加。

A man without a smiling face must not open a shop. 人無笑臉，不要開店。

He’s a shining example of a hard-working pupil. 他是用功學生的優秀榜樣。

She is a walking [living] dictionary in her field. 她在自己的業務范圍內是一部活詞典。

但是，有時也可見到單個的現在分詞用作后置定語，但主要見于有較強的動作意義的情形時(接近一個定語從句時)。如：

Oh, it’s the cake burning. 噢，糕點烤焦了。

There were no soldiers drilling. 沒有士兵在操練。

二、現在分詞作定語的后置

如果是現在分詞短語作定語，則只能放在所修飾的名詞之后。如：

We can offer you a job cleaning cars. 我們可以給你一份擦洗汽車的工作。

The woman washing the dishes is my aunt. 洗盤子的那個婦女是我姑媽。

This information is freely available to anyone wishing to see it. 想看這條信息的人可以隨意看。

The company sent me a brochure containing (=which contained) all the information, needed. 公司寄給我一個小冊子，包含了我需要的所有資料。

This was one of the experiments being carried out in the country. 這是國內正在進行的試驗之一。

She recognized the potential for error in the method being used. 她意識到在所采用的方法中可能出錯。

The gunman escaped on a motorcycle being ridden by an accomplice. 槍手乘坐一輛由同伙駕駛的摩托車逃跑了。
