關于現在分詞短語being…用作后置定語

根據英語習慣，由現在分詞 being 構成的短語一般不能用作后置定語，除非這個 being 是構成被動結構的助動詞。如可以說：

Who is the woman being operated on? 正在動手術的女人是誰?

I wasn’t interested in the question being discussed. 我對討論的問題不感興趣。

The distinction being made is purely academic. 作出的這一區分是純學術性的。

The building being renovated is an ancient temple. 正在翻修的那個建筑是一座古廟。

This was one of the experiments being carried out in the country. 這是國內正在進行的試驗之一。

She recognized the potential for error in the method being used. 她意識到在所采用的方法中可能出錯。

The gunman escaped on a motorcycle being ridden by an accomplice. 槍手乘坐一輛由同伙駕駛的摩托車逃跑了。

The nuclear plant now being built is expected to be commissioned in five years' time. 正在建造的核電站預計在五年后投產。

但是，如果其中的being不是助動詞，故不能這樣用（可考慮改用定語從句）。如：

凡10點鐘以后仍在外面的人將被逮捕。

正：Anyone who is outside after ten o’clock will be arrested.

誤：Anyone being outside after ten o’clock will be arrested.

誰要是遲到了，老板會向誰嚴厲地皺一下眉。

正：The owner gives a severe frown to anyone who is late.

誤：The owner gives a severe frown to anyone being late.

他住在我們對面的那棟房子里。

正：He lives in the house which is opposite ours.

誤：He lives in the house being opposite ours.

對一只狩獵的動物來說，好的視力是一種極為有用的品質。

正：Good eyesight is a quality which is extremely valuable for a hunting animal.

誤：Good eyesight is a quality being extremely valuable for a hunting animal.
