用于“the+某些國籍的形容詞”中表示某國人的總稱。如：

The French like to eat well. 法國人很講究吃。

The French are said to have a special sense of beauty. 法國人據(jù)說具有特殊的審美觀。

The British drink a lot of tea. 英國人喝很多茶。

The British are said to have an unusual sense of humour. 據(jù)說英國人有一種特殊的幽默感。

用于“the + police / public等集合名詞”中表示這類人的總稱。如：

The police are on the hunt for further clues. 警方正進(jìn)一步尋找線索。

The police have nothing concrete to go on. 警方?jīng)]有任何確實(shí)的東西作依據(jù)。

The public should be educated in how to use energy more effectively. 應(yīng)教育公眾更有效地利用能源。

(16)用于修飾same, only, very等形容詞

即用于“the same / only / very +名詞”結(jié)構(gòu)中。如：

He is the very person for the work. 他是最適合做這工作的人。

Those are the very words that he used. 那是他的原話。

Personal abuse was the only payment he got for his efforts. 他努力所得只是一頓臭罵。

She must be more reasonable but by the same token you must try to understand her. 她得講點(diǎn)理，可你也得盡量體諒她。

(17)用于單位名詞前表標(biāo)標(biāo)準(zhǔn)

即用于“單位詞”（hour, day, month, year, dozen, gallon, ton, yard等）前表示標(biāo)準(zhǔn)，相當(dāng)于漢語的“按”“論”“每”等。如：

We hire out vans by the day. 我們按日出租客貨車。

The eggs are sold by the dozen. 雞蛋按打出售。

Do you sell eggs by the kilo or by the dozen? 雞蛋怎么賣，論公斤，還是論打?

但是，by weight（按重量）習(xí)慣上不用冠詞。如：

Do you charge carriage by weight? 你們按重量收運(yùn)費(fèi)嗎?

Are bananas sold by weight or at how much a piece? 香蕉是按重量出售, 還是按多少錢一根出售?
