The better I knew him, the more I liked him. The more difficult the questions are, the less likely I’ll be able to answer them. 2. the+比較級+of the two 表示“兩者中較… He is the taller of the two. She was the more promising worker of the two. Things are getting better and better every day. It’s becoming more and more difficult to find a job. 4. not +比較級+ than / no +比較級+ than 比較級前加not,表示前者不如后者,與not as…as相當(dāng);比較級前加no是對兩者的否定,意為“和…… He is not taller than me. He is no taller than me. (即一樣矮) His English is not better than mine. His English is no better than mine. (即一樣差) You are not more careful than he is. You are no more careful than he is. (即一樣粗心) 5. no more than與not more than 兩者均可表示數(shù)量,前者表示“僅僅”、“只不過”,強(qiáng)調(diào)少;而后者表示“不多于”、“至多”。如: This test takes no more than thirty minutes. For thirty years, he had done no more than he had needed to. He has not more than three children. 6. no more…than與not more…than 兩者均可用于比較,前者表示對兩者都否定,意為“同…… He is no more a writer than a painter. (= He is neither a painter nor a writer.) He’s no more able to read Spanish than I am. (=Neither he nor I am not read Spanish.) She is not more clever than he is. (= She is not so clever as he is.) This book is not more difficult than that one. (This book is not so difficult as that one.) 7. no less than 與not less than 表示均可表示數(shù)量,前者意為“多達(dá)”、“有… He paid no less than $10,000 for it. He paid not less than $10,000 for it. He walks no less than five miles to school. He has no less than seven daughters. He has not less than seven daughters. 有時兩者都可譯為“至少”,但no less than語氣比not less than要夸張,表示所涉及的數(shù)量比預(yù)料的要多,其用法可比較其反義結(jié)構(gòu)no more than(只不過,只有),用于強(qiáng)調(diào)少。 8. no more …than 與 no less…than 前者意為“與… She’s no more a great singer than I am. Your brother is no less wise than you. A whale is no more a fish than a horse is. A dolphin is no less a clever animal than a dog is. Would you mind speaking less quickly? The movie was less funny than the book. This is the least useful of the four books. It is said that those who eat the most are the least healthy. 10. less…than… Statistics show that there are more boys than girls at school. Airports were more closely watched than anyplace else. All human beings are much more intelligent than animals. He is more hungry than tired. I was more annoyed than worried. The work is more or less finished. The answers were more or less right. It’s an hour’s journey, more or less. Don’t worry—the child will come back sooner or later. You should tell her, because she’ll find out sooner or later. She says we could use her car, and what’s more, she’ll pay for the petrol. He came home after midnight, and what’s more, hew as drunk. (4) no sooner…than…:其意為“一… 如: We had no sooner set out than a thunderstorm broke. No sooner had he gone to sleep than the telephone rang once again. |
