follow主要用法歸納

1. 表示“跟隨”，可用作及物或不及物動(dòng)詞。如：

Follow close behind. 緊跟在后面。

Summer follows spring. 春去夏來。

The dog follows me wherever I go. 我不論到哪里，這狗都跟著。

表示某人或某物跟在另一人或另一物后面，一般不與介詞behind 或after 連用，以免構(gòu)成用詞重復(fù)（盡管偶爾可見到這類用法，但在現(xiàn)代英語中很少見，初學(xué)者最好不用）。但有時(shí)可后接用作副詞的behind。如：

You go ahead. We’ll follow behind. 你們先走，我們隨后就來。

2. 有時(shí)與there搭配使用，構(gòu)成類似there be的結(jié)構(gòu)。如：

There followed a long silence. 然后是一陣冗長的沉默。

There will follow an interval of five minutes. 隨后將有5分鐘休息。

3. 不要按照漢語習(xí)慣，將漢語表達(dá)中的“跟著某人做某事”直譯為 follow sb to do sth, 而應(yīng)根據(jù)情況選用適當(dāng)?shù)木湫汀Ｈ纾?/SPAN>

我跟他去了車站。

誤：I followed him to go to the station.

正：I followed him to the station.

我跟著他讀生詞。

誤：I followed him to read the new words.

正：I read the new words after him.

4. follow的用法很多，除表示“跟著”外，還可表示“聽從”“遵循”“沿著”“仿效”“聽懂”“明白”等義。如：

Do you follow me? 你能聽懂我的話嗎?

Follow the traffic rules. 遵循交通規(guī)則。

We should follow his advice. 我們應(yīng)該聽他的勸告。

He followed his sister’s example and went to college. 他效仿他的姐姐也進(jìn)了大學(xué)。

Follow this road until you get to the corner, then turn left. 沿著這條路走到拐角處，然后向左拐。
