如何確定比較級和最高級前的冠詞

一、基本原則

1. 單獨使用的比較級，無論是形容詞還是副詞，其前通常不用冠詞。如：

The bed was hard, but it was better than nothing.  床有點硬，但有總比沒有要好。

It might have been done better if you had been more careful. 如果你更細心一點你可能會干得更好的。

You learn a language better if you visit the country where it’s spoken. 若到說某種語言的國家去，你就能把該種語言學得更好些。

2. 形容詞最高級前通常要用定冠詞，副詞最高級前可以用定冠詞，但也可以省略。如：

I used to go everywhere with my mother being as I was the youngest. 我以前到哪兒都跟著我媽，因為我是老小。

The Grand Canyon is best seen at sunset when it seems to change colour. 當日落太陽要改變顏色時，大峽谷是最好看的。

二、如何確定比較級前的冠詞

比較級前通常不用冠詞，但是在以下情況，可以用冠詞：

1. 若比較級后跟有被修飾的名詞，則比較級前可以用冠詞，此時的冠詞不是用于修飾比較級，而是用于修飾其后的名詞。如：

You could get a better job if you spoke a foreign language. 要是你會說一種外語，那你就會找到更好的工作。

Which of them is the better choice?—Well, it’s hard to tell. 他們誰是更合適的人選?——嗯，這很難說。

但是，若受比較級修飾的名詞是表泛指的復數名詞或不可數名詞，則不用冠詞。如：

He’s got more money than the rest of us (put) together. 他的錢比我們大家的加在一起的總數還多。

Fewer people write with their left hand than with their right. 用左手寫字的人比用右手的少。

2. 當要特指兩者中“較(更)……”時，比較級前通常要帶定冠詞，此時可視為比較級后省略了有關的名詞或代詞one，即定冠詞實為修飾被省略的名詞或代詞one。如：

Which of the two methods is the better? 這兩種方法哪一種更好?

3. 在比較級前用the表示程度(通常有表示原因、理由或條件的短語或從句)。如：

You’ll feel all the better for a good night’s sleep. 你好好睡上一夜，會感覺好得多。

Sunday mornings were nice. I enjoyed them all the more because Sue used to come round to breakfast. 星期日早上很美好。因為休常常過來吃早餐，我就更加喜歡星期日早上了。

4. 用于“the+比較級，the+比較級”，表示“越……越……”。如：

The more expensive petrol becomes, the fewer people drive. 汽油越貴，開車的人就越少。

The younger you start learning a language, the better you’ll speak it. 開始學語言的年齡越小說得越好。

注意，這類句式有時可以省略其中的動詞be。如：

The warmer the weather, the better I feel. 天氣越暖和我感覺越舒服。

The higher the interest rate, the greater the financial risk—which, of course, cuts both ways. 利率越高，金融風險也就越大，這當然是有利有弊的事。

5. 當by far用于修飾比較級且置于其前時，比較級前要用the。

He is by far the cleverer than her. 他比她聰明得多。

by far 的這類用法不算常見，它與比較級連用通常是置于其后。如：

It is quicker by far to go by train. 乘火車要快得多。

Goddard’s first film was better by far. 戈達德的第一部電影要好得多。

但是，by far 最常見的用法是修飾最高級，可置于最高級之前或之后。如：

That is by far the best choice. 這是最好的選擇。

She is the best teacher by far. 她是最最好的老師。
