clothes與clothing的區(qū)別

clothes和clothing均可表示衣服的統(tǒng)稱，但clothes是一個沒有單數(shù)形式的復(fù)數(shù)名詞（永遠是復(fù)數(shù)），而clothing則是一個沒有復(fù)數(shù)形式的單數(shù)名詞（永遠不可數(shù)）。如：

Soak the clothes in cold water. 把這些衣服浸泡在冷水里。

You shouldn’t wear informal clothes to an interview. 參加面時，不應(yīng)該穿得隨隨便便的。

兩者比較而言，clothes的含義比較具體，而clothing的含義則比較抽象。如：

She hung the clothes on the line to dry. 她把衣服掛在繩上晾干。

Our clothing protects us against the cold. 我們的衣服可以御寒。

但是, 若不考慮其細微區(qū)別，clothes和clothing常可換用。如：

Warm clothes are [clothing is] a must in the mountains. 在山里厚衣服是必不可少的。

另外，在a wolf in sheep’s clothing（披著羊皮的狼）這一習語中，習慣上用clothing。如：

He turned out to be a wolf in sheep’s clothing. 他原來是只披著羊皮的狼。

He certainly seems harmless enough, but is he a wolf in sheep’s clothing? 看起來他倒是十分和善，但會不會是披著羊皮的狼？
