兩者之間比較不可以用最高級嗎？

2007年全國高考四川卷第31題：

Of the two coats, I’d choose the__________ one to spare some money for a book.

A. cheapest     B. cheaper   C. more expensive   D. most expensive

所給答案為B。

筆者認為選擇項A也是正確的，即在兩者之間比較也可以用最高級。請看例證：

1. 王福禎主編《英語慣用法大詞典》(北京科學技術出版社1994年8月第1版)p477：

Shakespeare, Addison, Johnson, Goldamith, Chesterfield, Ruskin, Emerson, Hawthorne, Irving, Scott, Thackeray, Lamb等作家在其文學作品中的兩人(或兩物)的比較用最高級的卻不乏其例。例如：

Of the two disputants, the warmest is generally the wrong. 在比較偏重俗語的口語中對兩者進行比較時用最高級的也不少。有時講究用詞標準的作家的作品中也能找到這種用法。例如：We’ll see which is strongest, you or I.

She was the youngest of the two daughters.

2. 陳敦金主編《英美語慣用法詞典》(福建教育出版社1998年4月第2版)p181：

在非正式談話中，Which is the cheapest/ the best/ the worst…?常常聽到，即使兩者相比較也是這樣用。有時也用來強調兩者之間差別的程度：She is the best/ worst of the two.

3. 章振邦主編《新編英語語法》(修訂本)上冊(上海譯文出版社1989年7月第1版)p693：

在口語中，也能聽到用最高級形式表示兩者之間的比較，例如：Look at these two watches. Which is the cheapest?

4. 劉旭寶主編《英美語慣用法實用詞典》(西南交通大學出版社1993年5月第1版)p955：

Whitney[ Essentials of Eng.Gram., p81]認為這種用法很常見，指出：“嚴格地說，在對兩者進行比較時，應當用比較級，在對三者進行比較時，應當用最高級。但在一般的會話以及文學作品中，即使對兩者進行比較最高級也是極為常見的現象，但用比較級更準確也更好一些�！�

Curme [Syntax,p504]也指出：“現在，這種用法在通俗的口語中仍然存在，例如 ‘the smallest of the two’,而且有時也見于文學語言�！辈⒘信e了如下用例。(例) They(i.e. the squirriels) seemed to vie with on another who should be most bold.—Thoreau. 美國的R. C. Pooley[Teaching EnglishUsage] 列舉了上述學者的見解，并的出結論：“認為對兩個人(或兩見事)進行比較時只能用比較級(不用最高級)，這不符合現代英語實際，是不準確的。最高級不僅能用于口語，而且也見于文風嚴謹的作品�？傊�，對二者進行比較用最高級也是完全正確的。”

5. A. J. Thomson and A. V. Martinet著《牛津實用英語語法》(第四版) 翻譯本(外語教學與研究出版社 1998年12月第1版) p62：

有時the+比較級也可以這樣用：Which (of these two) is the stronger? 比較級的這種用法被認為更有書面英語的味道，在非正式英語中我們常用最高級代替：Which (of these two) is the strongest?

6. L. G. 亞歷山大著《朗曼英語語法》(雷航等譯外語教學與研究出版社1991年1月第1版)p231：

在非正式場合，當我們比較兩個人或物時，我們有時可以用最高級形式來代替比較級：Who’s the most reliable, Frank or Alan?

同樣，the有時也可以省略，特別在which之后：Which is best? The red one or the green one?

7. R. A. Close 著A reference grammar for students of English (Eighth impression 1985 Printed in Hong Kong) p152：

The can be used with the comparative, as in

Look at the two watches. Which is the cheaper (of the two)?

However, “Which is the cheapest?” is frequently heard in informal speech, even when only two things are being compared.

以上大量例證充分證明了無論在英國英語還是在美國英語中，對兩者之間比較完全可以用最高級。從而證明了選擇項B也是正確的。作為高考試題的命題人不應該讓考生在兩個都是正確的答案中去判斷孰優孰劣。
