Eighth Grade之前必須用定冠詞嗎？

宋伯濤總主編《非常講解·八年級英語教材全解全析·上》江蘇牛津版(天津人民出版社 2006年6月第3版)p63：Year 8意為“八年級”，是英國英語中的表達，等于美國英語中的Grade 8。其中基數詞表達的是序數詞的概念。用序數詞表達為the Eighth Year或the Eighth Grade。由此可見用基數詞表達時不用冠詞，用序數詞表達時要用定冠詞，用基數詞表達時數字在后，用序數詞表達時序數詞在前。

筆者認為上面的說法是片面的，是不符合當前英語的實際的，用“序數詞+ Grade”表達時也不一定非要用定冠詞。盡管很多工具書如L. G. 亞歷山大著《朗曼英語語法》(雷航等譯，外語教學與研究出版社1991年1月第1版)、 Randolph Quirk著的《英語語法大全》( 翻譯本)(華東師范大學出版社，1989年9月第1版) 和 A.J. Thomson and A. V. Martinet著的《牛津實用英語語法》(第四版) 翻譯本(外語教學與研究出版社，1998年12月第1版)均沒有“序數詞+ Grade”之前不用定冠詞的例證，但在英國英語和美國英語中卻已經大量使用。

請看“序數詞+ Grade”之前不用定冠詞的例證：

I’m in 9th grade at Rocky Mountain High School in Dever.

2. 《牛津高階英漢雙解詞典》(第六版)(商務印書館 2004年 8月第2版)p761：

Sam was in (the) second grade. 薩姆讀二年級。

3.《柯林斯COBUILD英語詞典》(上海外語教育出版社 2000年10月第1版) p731：

Mr White teaches first grade in south Georgia.

4. TIME corpus of American English (1923-present) (Mark Davies, Brigham Young University)(http://corpus.byu.edu/time)：

2000-02-07 By seventh grade, chess is offered after school only.   (筆者譯：到七年級時， 只在放學后提供國際象棋。)  

2001-10-29 I was sent to the principal's office in first grade. (筆者譯：上一年級時，我被扭送倒校長室。)

2002-12-06 My artistic abilities became evident when I was in first and second grade,... (筆者譯：上一二年級時，我的藝術才能顯露出來。)

2003-02-21 His last year of formal schooling was ninth grade. (筆者譯：他最后一年的正規教育是九年級。)

2005-06-06   …, in fifth grade, when we were called to the playground to compete for…(筆者譯：……上五年級時，我們被叫到操場上進行 ……比賽。)

2006-02-17  …60th-birthday party for the President, attended by former classmates from first grade to Yale, and Bush was in high spirits. (筆者譯：……參加總統60歲生日宴會的有他以前從一年級到耶魯大學的同學，布什非常高興。)                            

5. BNC(英國國家語料庫http://www.natcorp.ox.ac.uk):

During the same period only about 70 per cent of the pupils who complete fifth grade every year will be able to continue their schooling in the regular education system. (筆者譯：在同一時期，完成五年級學業的只有大約70％學生能夠在正規的教育系統繼續接受教育。)

Rural drop-outs remained on average around 20 per cent, and 45 per cent at sixth grade. (筆者譯：農村的輟學率仍在平均大約 20％，而六年級是45％。)

I wanted to find a better job, but for a factory you need to have finished school and in the coffee processing industries they ask for ninth grade. (筆者譯：我想找份好點的工作，而工廠需要你完成學業，咖啡加工工廠需要九年級畢業。)

以上例證足以說明無論美國英語還是英國英語都把“序數詞+ Grade”之前不用定冠詞當作標準的英語，并大量地使用。
