不可以這樣搭配嗎?

■席玉虎主編《英語常用詞用法詳解大詞典》(L-Z)(商務(wù)印書館國際有限公司 2007年6月北京第1版)p2541：

……從搭配上來說，這三個詞都可接名詞(如an offer)作賓語，但invitation只能與refer(筆者注：refer應(yīng)為reject), decline搭配；suggestion只能與reject, decline搭配；permission只能與refuse搭配；plan只能與reject搭配。

■高凌主編《英語常用動詞詳解詞典》(北京出版社2002年2月第2版)p312：

……這三個詞搭配上不同：接invitation時不能用reject，可以用decline；接permission不能用refuse 和reject；只能用decline；接suggestion不能用refuse，只能用decline； 接plan 或proposal時不能用refuse 和decline，只能用reject；而接order時decline，refuse 和reject都可以用。

■筆者認(rèn)為上述某些說法是不符合當(dāng)前英語實際的，因為他們沒有經(jīng)過認(rèn)真研究，只是借鑒前人的成果，而前人的成果在當(dāng)時可能是正確的，在現(xiàn)在則不一定正確，因為語言是不斷發(fā)展的。

首先，無論是在英國英語還是在美國英語中，refuse都可以和invitation搭配。請看例證：

在BNC(英國國家語料庫http://www.natcorp.ox.ac.uk)上共有22例refuse和invitation搭配的例句：

He had murmured some excuse but had been unable to refuse an invitation to supper at the vicarage during the coming week. (筆者譯：他喃喃地說一些借口，但無法拒絕在未來一周在牧師家吃晚飯的邀請。)

She recoiled and of course refused his invitation. (筆者譯：她退縮了，當(dāng)然拒絕他的邀請。)

Suchocka was reported to have refused an invitation to meet the strikers. 據(jù)報道蘇霍茨卡拒絕了同罷工者會面的請求。

在BUY CORPUS OF AMERICAN ENGLISH (1990-2008) (Mark Davies, Brigham Young University) http://www.americancorpus.org/上至少有11例refuse和invitation搭配的例句：

The Court refused the invitation, concluding that such standards must be set without regard to cost. (筆者譯：法庭拒絕了這一請求，并斷定，制定這樣標(biāo)準(zhǔn)沒有考慮到成本。)

Edith should absolutely have refused the invitation, but there was nothing to be done about it now. (筆者譯：伊迪絲本應(yīng)完全拒絕這個邀請，但現(xiàn)在對此卻無計可施。)

Thousands outside protested that they'd been excluded from the talks; others refused the invitation. (筆者譯：數(shù)千人在外面抗議他們被排除在談判之外；其他人則拒絕了這個邀請。)

其次，無論是在英國英語還是在美國英語中，reject都可以和invitation搭配。

在BNC(英國國家語料庫http://www.natcorp.ox.ac.uk)上共有2例refuse和invitation搭配的例證：

 Once Shamir had rejected this invitation, Peres entered into intensive negotiations in an attempt to achieve a majority. (筆者譯：一旦沙米爾拒絕了這一請求，佩雷斯將進(jìn)行細(xì)致的談判以達(dá)到大多數(shù)。)

在BUY CORPUS OF AMERICAN ENGLISH (1990-2008) (Mark Davies, Brigham Young University) http://www.americancorpus.org/上有5 例refuse和invitation搭配的例證：

We should reject the invitation. (筆者譯：我們應(yīng)當(dāng)拒絕這個邀請。)

…, it was pressure from government officials that made him reject the invitation to meet. (筆者譯：來自政府官員的壓力迫使他拒絕會面。)
