unless與if…not…同與異

1. 當所述條件會結束已經存在的想法或狀態時，用或都可以。如：

We shall go unless it rains tomorrow. =We shall go if it doesn’t rain tomorrow. 如果明天不下雨，我們就去。(“下雨”會結束“去”這一已經存在的趨向)

You will be late unless you start at once. =You’ll be late if you don’t start at once. 如果不馬上走你就要遲到。(“馬上走”會結束“遲到”這一趨向)

2. 當所述條件會導致一種新的想法或情況時，通常用if…，而不用unless。如：

I’ll be angry if I’m not invited to the party. 如果不邀請我參加聚會我會生氣的。(“不邀請”就會導致“生氣”這種新情況)

3. 表示虛擬條件只能用if…not，不用unless。如：

He would have died if the doctor had not saved him in time. 要是醫生不及時救了他，他早就死了。

4. 若需定再與否定連用，用unless，不用if…not。如(www.hz123456.com)：

譯：如果沒有別的人去，我就去。

正：I will go unless no one else does.

誤：I will go if no one else doesn’t.
