六、冒號

冒號是一個補充、連貫的符號，被用來引起讀者注意下文。冒號多用于正式而莊重的話題中，具體用法如下：

1. 列出表示列舉、解釋或說明性的詞語。如：

His favourite foods are as follows: apple pie, fruit juice, and chocolate. 他喜歡的食物有下列東西：如蘋果派，果汁和巧克力。

2. 引出較長的正式引語或大段引語。如：

In his most famous speech, he said: all men are created equal and must enjoy the equal rights that are given by God. 在他最著名的演講中，他說：人生來是平等的，必須享受上帝所賦予的平等權利。

3. 用于時與分之間、比率數之間。如：

The train is to leave at 7:20. 火車7:20開。

The proportion of men to women is 3:5. 男人與女人的比例是3:5。

七、破折號

破折號是用來加強語氣的符號，往往起到冒號，分號或逗號的作用。其用法如下：

1. 用于解釋性插入語之前。如：

Give your secretary what she needs－pencil, paper and a good typewriter. 給你的秘書她所想要的東西——鉛筆、紙和一臺好的打字機。

2. 表示說話突然中斷、意思突然轉換或猶豫不決。如：

“I’d like to,” he said, “but－”“我想”，他說，“但是——”

“Well－it’s hard to explain.”“嗯――這很難解釋。”

3. 引出被強調的詞語。如：

The only person that he admires is－Churchill. 他只欽佩一個人――丘吉爾。

4. 分隔非限定性修飾語、同位語或附加成分的詞語。如：

He is the exact person ―the person that I expected. 他就是那個人――我要找的人。

5. 表示概括性詞語。如：

English, Chinese and maths－all these are the subjects that he should study. 英語、語文、數學――所有這些都是他該學的科目。

6. 表示引文出處。如：

I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat.
