1.表示“工作”時，為不可數名詞。如：

He advised me not to take too much work. 他勸我不要做太多的工作。

若要表示可數的“工作”，可根據情況使用job, task之類的詞。如：

Steve has finally found a job. 史蒂夫最后找到一份工作。

Gifts performed most of the tasks. 姑娘們負責干大部分的工作。

2.表示“作品”時，有時可數有時不可數，其區別是：若表示人們用手工制作的東西（what is produced by work, esp of the hands），如工藝品、針錢活、刺繡品等，不可數；若表示文學家、藝術家、音樂家等的“作品”“著作”等，則可數。如：

What a wonderful piece of work！It must have taken months to make. 多么精制的一件工藝品啊! 一定花了好幾個月才制成。

He has published several works of great scientific importance. 他出版了好幾本重要的科學著作。

3. 表示“著作”時，是可數名詞，若表示某個作家或藝術家的全部作品，通常要用復數。如：

Do you like The Complete Works of Shakespeare? 你喜歡這套《莎士比亞全集》嗎?

4. 表示“工廠”時，無論是單數還是復數，均要用works；用作主語時，其謂語動詞需根據具體語境來確定。如：

A large steel works was built here in the thirties. 30年代這里建了一座大鋼鐵工廠。

A number of steel works were built here in the thirties. 30年代這里建了一些鋼鐵工廠。

若沒有特定的上下文，謂語用單數或復數均可。如：

The glass works is [are] near the station. 玻璃工廠在車站附近。
