一、alone的用法

1. 獨自的; 單獨的(without any other people)

(1) 作表語。例如：

She was alone in that large house. 她獨自一人呆在那所大房子里。

Tom is not alone in finding Rick hard to work with. 并不只是湯姆一人認(rèn)為和里克難以共事。

(2) 作賓語補(bǔ)足語。例如：

Suddenly they found themselves alone together in the room. 突然，他們發(fā)現(xiàn)屋子里只剩下他們兩個。    

2. 無依無靠；孤獨；寂寞( lonely and unhappy or without friends)

作表語。例如：

I’ve been so alone since you went away. 你走了以后我一直很寂寞。

He felt terribly alone when June left. 瓊走后，他感到非常孤獨。

It was scary being all alone in a strange city. (all alone=completely)獨自一人身處陌生的城市真令人害怕

3. (用于名詞或代詞后)唯一；只有(used after a noun or pronoun to show the person or thing mentioned is the only one)

作后置定語。例如：

Of all the applicants, she alone had the right qualifications. 在所有的申請人，只有她符合條件。

4. (用于名詞或代詞后以加強(qiáng)語氣)僅僅；單；只(used after a noun or pronoun to emphasize one particular thing)

作后置定語。例如：

The price alone was enough to put me off the idea. 單是價格就讓我打消了這個念頭。

二、alone的搭配

1. be / feel / sit / stand alone。例如：

These islands are too small to stand alone as independent states. 這些島嶼太小了，無法單獨作為獨立的國家。

2. leave sb / let sb alone。例如：

Don't touch me! Leave me alone! 不要碰我！讓我一個人待會兒。

3. very much alone例如：

I felt vulnerable and very much alone. 我感到非常孤獨和脆弱。

注：現(xiàn)代英語中，very 也可修飾alone。

4. all / completely / entirely / quite alone。例如：

Carol felt all alone in the world. 在世界上卡羅爾感到非常孤獨。

5. alone together。例如：

Finally the two of us were alone together. 最后，我們兩個人單獨在一起。

6. alone with。例如：

She did not want to be alone with him. 她不想與他單獨在一起。

7. be alone in doing sth 只一個人做……  例如：

You are not alone in worrying about the problem. 不只是你一個人在為這個問題擔(dān)心。

三、辨析

1. only, single, sole, unique, alone 

這些形容詞均可表示“唯一的”之意。

only 普通用詞，常可與sole換用，但側(cè)重僅限于指定的人或物，而不需要更多。

single 語氣較強(qiáng)，強(qiáng)調(diào)僅此一個，再無第二個。

sole 語氣強(qiáng)于only，指僅有一個或一群，只考慮這一個或這一群。

unique 非正式用詞，側(cè)重在一類中唯一無可匹敵、無與倫比的特。

alone  著重專指某人或某物，而不是別的。通常作后置定語。

2. alone, lonely, lonesome, lone，solitary

這些形容詞在表示缺少伙伴這個意思時可進(jìn)行比較。

(1) alone  表示客觀上“沒別人和你在一起，既無褒義也無貶義。”強(qiáng)調(diào)不和他人在一起但并不意味不快樂。通常作表語和賓語補(bǔ)足語。例如：

“I am never less alone, than when I am alone.”  “我從來不比自己獨處時更孤獨。”

(2) lonely和 lonesome 表示主觀上的“孤獨”和“寂寞”之意。前者常指痛苦地意識到自己獨自一人；后者強(qiáng)調(diào)一種傷感的對伙伴的渴望。通常作定語。例如：

‘No doubt they are dead,’ she thought, and felt..sadder and...lonelier for the thought.  毫無疑問他們都死了，她越想越感到傷心和孤單。

“You must keep up your spirits, mother, and not be lonesome because I'm not at home.”  “你一定要振作精神，媽媽，不要因為我不在家就感到孤單。”

lonely和 lonesome 也可用于修飾地點等，表示讓人“感到寂寞的” 。 例如：

a lonesome little town on the prairie 草原上一個人跡罕至的小鎮(zhèn)(www.hz123456.com)

(3) lone和solitary  修飾人或事物時，指該人或事物是某個地點唯一的一個，因此會顯得寂寞。例如：

a lone figure in the middle of the square 廣場中央孤零零的一個人

solitary常包含lonely 和 lonesome兩個詞的意思，指喜歡獨處的。例如：

She thoroughly enjoyed her solitary dinner. 她非常喜歡獨自吃的那頓飯。

注：不要過分夸大alone 和lonely的區(qū)別。
