1. 用作介詞，注意以下用法：

(1) 表示時間，意為“在……以前”，其后只能接點時間或具有點時間意義的其他名詞，而不能接一段時間。如：

I’ll be back before five (o’clock). 我5點前回來。

We arrived there two days before Christmas. 我們于圣誕節(jié)前兩天到達(dá)那兒。

(2) 表示在兩者中選擇其一，意為“寧可……而不愿……”。如：

They would die before surrendering. 他們寧死而決不投降。

True men choose death before dishonour. 大丈夫可殺而不可辱。

2. 用作連詞引導(dǎo)時間狀語從句，除表示“在……之前”這一基本義外，還有以下用法值得注意：

(1) 表示“寧可……也不愿”。如

They would die before surrendering. 他們寧死不屈。

(2) 表示“不到……就”“還沒有……就”。如：

Before the week was out, they were dead. 那個星期還沒過完他們就死了。

(3) 表示“以免”“免得”。如：

(5) 表示“（多久后）才”“（多久后）就”。如：

It won’t be long before they understand each other. 過不了多久他們就會互相了解的。

It will be a long time before we finish this dictionary. 我們需要很長的時間才能把這部詞典編譯完。

3. 用作副詞，表示“以前”，注意以下用法：

(1) 與具體時間連用（置于其后），通常與過去完成時連用（多見于賓語從句中）。如：

He said he had told her about it two years before. 他說他兩年前就把那事告訴她了。

(2) 泛指“以前”，不與具體時間連用，可完成時或過去時連用。如：

I (have) read the book before. 我以前讀過這本書。

You should have told me so before. 你早就該告訴我了。
